Cross threaded injector hole.

So how does one remedy if they encounter that the threads for the injector seat have been cross threaded?

Can that be removed and how?
Or would you be screwed over?

The devil is in the details. If the "mechanic" started the injector and cross-threaded it but did not force it past two or three threads............you'll just need to clean up the three threads with a proper tap. This is not an easy task, however, because the tap wishes to start on the crossed threads and it takes a skilled machinist to force the tap to start on proper threads.

If the entire set of threads is destroyed, you're looking at some major work. You'll need to drill it out for a timesert or a Helicoil. This is really machine shop work and the results on the engine with a hand drill might not be satisfactory. Furthermore, the prechamber will fill with metal chips and you'll probably need to pull it to be sure you've got all the chips out of the holes.

and it has to be 20F outside!

what size tap would that be? :D

Side note, the car ran smoothly with white smoke puffing out of that injector area, ha. oh boy.

Don't attempt this at those temperatures without experience.

Hell, I wouldn't do it myself out there with some experience.

Once mistake with the tap and the cylinder head must come off.

Find a skilled machinist.............

My dad used to be a machinist, im just trying to figure out the tap size so I can see if my mechanic has it (to borrow or just let him)

I took a look in the manual, but didn't find it. You'll have to determine it from the injector unless someone else posts.

My VW buddies gave me an idea, take an old injector (I have plenty of old VW junk ones) and cut grooves into it and use that if I can't find a tap. The VW and Benz use the same thread, shoot I even installed a set of benz inj in a VW before :D

:D, I know... I am not doing anything today or quickly, I have another car and I will let my dad have a look at it and talk to my mechanic before I DO anything

Just trying throwing ideas around, btw thank's Brian for all the responses.

Rushing into a repair unprepared without the required skill is always a recipe for disaster.

I'm not up on my OM601, but can't you just pull and replace the prechamber? I thought the injector threads into it.

Also, is it really a good idea to tap where metal shavings can fall into the combustion chamber?

M24x2

I measured the threads on an injector and it appears to be M24 x 2. Taps are available for that size, Snap On sells one for thirty some odd dollars. There are even helicoils for that thread.

what's the verdict on this... anybody?

Thanks for the thread size, I just got out one of my VW injectors that I had in pieces to measure and size of for ghetto fixing. :D

I'm 99.9% sure. :D
