Oil Supply for Bypass filter setup
I got an 84 300TD, I need to know the best places to get oil supply to run to a bypass filter setup i plan on installing. On that note i also need a good place to put a return line.
My theory's are using the supply to the pressure gauge to the dash coming up with some way to adapt to the fitting or the plate that bolts to filter housing. Return set up all I got is dropping the lower oil pan and installing a fitting to allow return flow.

Wouldnt it be a LOT easier to drill & tap a return fitting into the valve cover, than removing the oil pan? Or does it need to be gravity fed? I would think if the bypass setup is pressurized (even slightly), the valve cover would be a better bet. This is the way I've personally seen it done on pickup trucks.

A few questions.
Why do you want to install a secondary bypass lube oil filter? Do you have a specific filter in mind? Do you have any tech data for this filter? With a bypass filter, your oil pressure wil drop at idle since you are bleeding off oil pressure. Also the bypass must have a lower micron rating than the main filter otherwise it won't polish the oil and offer no gain over the primary filter. If the filter was installed inline to the turbo oil feed, there would be no main system pressure loss, minimal plumbing and offer turbo protection. Some check valves and a filter bypass must be installed. A check valve on the inlet of the filter would prevent drain back , a filter bypass would allow full pressure to the turbo when the oil is cold and thick. Some 90's VW / Audi turbo cars had 2 spin on filters, one was supposedly for the turbo. |

Cheers, I have mounted a few over the years,, 1962 MGA,, Dodge 318 and 83 Honda Sabre,, On the MG,, I drilled and taped a 1/8 npt for the line to the filter. It has a restriction orifice designed to only take 5 psi I taped into the main oil gallery that feeds the block after the oil pump and filter. The return line was drilled and taped into the block so that the oil dropped into the sump. Yes oil pressure was 5 psi lower. On the Honda I taped down stream into the last oil feeder gallery so that there was no oil pressure loss to any engine lubrication areas.
This worked out the best . On the Dodge, I put a 3 way tee at the oil pressure gauge at block 1/8 npt and return line via upper left hand cylinder head. |

I have seen some pictures here on the forum, where the filter lid was tapped and a line from there to the by-pass, and the return back into the valve cover to add extra lube to the timing chain.
