G-D Belt

Yeah, sometimes around 2 in the afternoon, I tell myself that I will never make it until I get home with my pants and belt as tight as they are. But that isn't what I'm angry about. For some reason, my 300D's a/c belt won't stay tight for more than six weeks. Now that it's cold and wet, the last two times the screech became unbearable, I have had to pay someone to tighten it for me (I don't have a garage). I have tried under and over tightening the bolt, but it still ends up moving. I have a fairly new belt (although it is NAPA, not MB). Any ideas for what I can do, short of welding, to keep this thing tight?

Make sure all the spacers and washers are in place.

The adjusting nut on my car is one of those "self tightening" like a nylock.

It's amazing how important, yet easily-overlooked things like washers can be . . . .

Are you loosening and then retightening the three large mounting bolts? Or just tightening the adjustment nut?

I have loosened the mounting bolts before I adjusted the adjusting bolt (or nut, as ya'll seem to call it) and then tightened them. Perhaps there are some missing washers on the bolts. I don't think there are any washers. The compressor was replaced soon before I got the car, so perhaps the good samaritan who did so did not replace the washers. What kind of washers are they? I guess I could find out from Phil and get the washers, too.

As for the belt, I'm pretty sure it says NAPA on it, but I'm not sure of the size. The mechanic I used to go to in Philly for inspections (they're annual there, unlike here in Maryland where they are only required once during your possession of a car) put it on for me on his own initiative. He would never have failed to replace the washers, however.

It's likely a US "equivalent" of the metric belt. But, it's not equivalent........it's too GD narrow.

Get the proper Continental belt and your problems will go away.

Bring it up here and I'll take a crack at it. I have a spare compressor on the blown engine here we can snag the correct washers from if yours are missing.

YES!. Agree 100%. I just went through the gd belt issue on my 420SEL. Used US equivilents and was pulling my hair out. Bought Continentals and it is now once again a reliable 126.

X3 on the belt being too narrow. I got a bum set from the dealer and had to replace them almost immediately as they would slip down into the pulley groove and loosen up. If John did not cut the belts off my old engine, they are practically new (6months) and are the correct width and thickness

I believe they're still on there. Garage is as clean as it's going to get, the right side is functional now.
