Anyone know what this is for?

I have an 87 300TDT and on the drivers side inner fender there is a "vent" for lack of a better description that is hooked to a lever and a spring that keeps it shut. It is adjacent to the AC pump. It is not hooked to anything else that I can see so nothing opens it. I have never noticed it before and found it quite by accident. Anyone know what it's purpose could possibly be intended for?

Its a temperature activated louver. If you have the underbelly, it keeps the engine compartment at the correct temperature. When the desired temp is reached, the vent opens to allow cooler air in.

Yes, the spring is a thermostat.

In fact you should have another one on the passenger side as well.

My ancient Beetle had thermostatically controlled louvers to control the cooling airflow to the engine. Funny how these things come back every so often...
