1995 E300 tranny question 744.435

OK, lets just say that "somebody" was looking at the above mentioned car. Seller discloses that the tranny sometimes won't engage reverse. They have to go back to park, then reverse and it will usually finally engage. It is not a linkage situation apparently. No word on fluid level, but it is perfect in all forward gears, and always engages the forward gears when selected.
I would appreciate any advice on the problem, the possible solutions, tranny rebuild costs, difficulty of tranny swap [it appears to be the same tranny as the 300E's based on vin data].
This car is in a bordering state so I have info to collect prior to ever seeing it in person. Just trying to do my due diligence up front.
Are the rear plastic bumpers much of a pain to replace?

Been there, done that repair on my TE.

Had a factory remaned trannie installed for like 2400 in my TE.

We had the trannie in the 190E rebuilt for $1800 iirc.

Its got the 722.435 trans. Uses std Dex III fluid.

Wonder if it could be something as easy as a bad shifter bushing or the beginnings of a NSS issue?

If "someone" visits and looks at it serously they should also confirm that the harness has been replaced and whether the GP's have been stuck and might have buggered up threads, etc.

I guess on something like that you look for a broken off glow plug end? Grab and wiggle to make sure it isn't glued back together for looks? Or can you even see them??
I'm doubting a linkage issue as it never affects the forward gear engagement. Is there something that affects reverse only that doesn't require a full rebuild?

Bearer of Bad Tidings

Losing Reverse capabilities is the beginning of the end of useful lifespan of that Tranny without a Reman.

Start looking around for a Rebuilder or a good(?) used unit.
