anyone had a mechanic change mounts?
 

I am looking to get the motor mounts on my 96 changed, cause I got a vibration that is something fierce. Just wondering how much this is going to cost me.

I just did it myself. Bought a pair of mounts on ebay for like, $100. It's not too hard of a job, maybe 2-4 hours for both sides, start to finish if you don't rush. Is your car vibrating badly in D but not in P, N or R? That's what mine was doing. Odds are you just need the passenger's side replaced since that's the downward force side. The one on the driver's side of my car was in good shape but I repaced it anyway.

Yours will be even easier since there's no turbo in the way. Come to think of it, I would bet you could swap out the passenger's side in about ten minutes.

Just call a mechanic and ask. They should be able to give you a quote right over the phone. Its a pretty straightforward job. I would guess about $300.

The '96 is easy, I did my own and posted a write-up w/pix here somewhere, can't find it at the moment. I had my mechanic do the motor mounts on my '87 but I was new to MB at that time and would do that job myself today.

The '87 cost me an hour and a half of shop time (at $100/hour) plus $99 each for two motor mounts, or $348 total plus sales tax.

The '96 cost me $121 on-line for two motor mounts and I did the work myself for free.

It's your money, you have to make the call. The job is not difficult, especially on an NA engine like the 606 in your car.

Pretty basic job; not as fun to do in the winter on your back on the cold wet concrete as it would be in the summer time.

On my turbo it took approx an hour on each side. The right side I was able to get to the top bolt from the top using a universal attachment ahead of the socket; yours is prob easier cause the turbo won't be blocking access. The left side is done all from below; watch the end of your rachet/wrench and the elect leads that are exposed down there.

Easy to do yourself.Every Mechanic I used lied and stole.

I just paid $194 this week for the drivers side. Midas.

As a counterpoint, I'll say it's easy but not straightforward for an inexperienced wrench. Too many things we take for granted like how high to lift the engine, how to align the thicker shank of the lower bolt with the crossmember hole (maybe a 124 only thing), how tight is tight when you can't get a torque wrench under a 124 turbo, etc.

If this car gets TopSider oil changes, it's a rare chance to have a inspect the bottom of the engine.

well, unfortunately, I dont have a garage, or even a driveway. I have to park on the side of the street, so I really dont have anywhere to do it myself. And at the moment, it is snowing. :(

Probably, you should check out the tranny mount, too. Might as well get them all done at the same time.
