Over voltage protection relay

The tach on my '85 300SD has never worked, and the ABS light comes on after the car begins moving. It has been this way for as long as I have owned the car and I have tried to educate myself as much as possible as to the culprits.

I have found some material on this relay and am curious as to if it were bad, would all other functions tied to it be non-functioning? I found some posts mostly regarding SDLs dealing with the same problem: no tach and ABS light, but seemingly no other problems.

I would really appreciate any help on this matter, thanks guys!

ovp

I had found the same problem on a friends 300td wagon 1987, the ovp can be repaired. It has a couple of solder joints that fracture and all you do is re-solder and everything goes back to normal. Why spend the $90 if all you have to do is use a nickels worth of solder and 3 minutes.

I agree with the repair suggestion but will also note that new replacements are available for under $52.

I believe on my 87 300D when the OVP went, the AC stopped working also, in addition to the ABS light being on and the Tach not working.

Check the OVP fuse first. Replace, if no change, get replacement OVP.

Ovp

I did in fact repair mine by re-soldering. It lasted about 2 weeks, then died
again. I have lots of "junk" I've collected at garage sales, so I dug through
all my boxes and found a suitable relay to gut to replace the open coil in the OVP. It took all day. I did give me a good understanding of how it worked and has been functioning fine for quite a while now. I probably just should have purchased a new one that plugs in in a couple minutes, however I kinda
like to figure stuff out. Not when I'm doing it exactly, I'm usually irritable and ragey, but when it's done
I get a really big WOO-HOO!! A feeling like no other.

Just for people searching in the future - The OVP is located behind a cover behind the battery on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Remove the cover and you will see the OVP - Silver case with a spade type fuse on the top of it. Probably a 1" by 1" by 2" high cube.
