W.I Simonsen MB in Santa Monica has an 1985 300D for over $10K, but when I was there and asked if that was really the price, they told me it was on sale for $8,600.

I think the seller is using the low miles (49,000 actual) to justify the high asking price.

I'll keep watching to see if the car sells or price lowers.

I found a 85 300D with 49K miles.. "not running". The guy said it was sitting for a long time and he had no idea why it was not running...

So I went to look at this car because he was asking $2500 and I thought it may be something simple.

So I get there (a impound lot in the Bronx) and it was a FLOOD CAR. I was sick, what a shame. Worst part is, the scumbag did'nt tell me over the phone. We had a few words.

Looks like the car was running at the time of the flood (water upto the dash) and the engine sucked in water and killed it. A real shame. Notice the tach and oil pressure... the car is off.

9800, sounds like a deal to me. You want the best, you're gonna have to pay for it, unless you know something or someone I don't. You don't want to know what I paid for mine, with a lot more miles. If you got the bucks, and want the car, buy it! Believe me, what it would cost you to bring a lesser car up to snuff, you may as well have the best! But you'll pay for it. Sounds like a deal to me.

Now I may be thinking out loud but here is what entered my mind

Is this going to be your first 300d (If not are you sure you are going to like it)
You may still have to put parts into it. All Rubber and fluids, tires, ect.....The stuff you have to consider with any used car.
Low miles while being a nice feature does not mean that one with higher miles wound last forever also... That is what these cars are known for mine has 245000 and I paid 3750. IT also was in nice shape with all service records (such a big deal with these cars)

The primary problem is that if you pay that much for that car and want to sell it for more than half of what you paid you will have some trouble.

Anyhow, It is only money and if you plan on keeping this car for over five years it will serve you well. These cars are tanks and your is a new one.

good luck

Thanks, The Bob.

Yes, this would be my first 300D.

I drove a 1990 300D (124) and really liked it.

I do not think I will touch this 85 for $9800. I can get a 91 or 92 300D for that kind of money, with a few more miles, of course.

I got my 82 300D for $2500. It came with all the service records (I even have the data plate and brochure from the place the original owners bought it). Yes the 2nd owner (the guy I bought it from) didn't treat it as well as it deserved, but what needed to be done was easily fixed by myself (driveshafts, front end, suspension, and the steering box is next on the list when the repair season comes around).

Anyways. That 85 300D should be in perfect condition for $9800.
Just be sure to check it over VERY carefully. Then go think about it for a few days and if you feel like thats the car, go buy it.

For $9800 you can get a 90-91 300D ...with a few more miles.....drive the 85 and the 90 and ask yourself which one you prefer....I am sure with no question what your choice will be

Sometimes I think these sellers take low mileage too far... no matter how low the mileage is doesn't change what the car is....my local dealer had a blk/blk 91 420 SEL with 7K miles.....that right 7 K!!....they were asking 30K for the car...and I think they sold it somewhere near that price.....

Warren:

IMHO, compared to the 123 diesels, the 124 diesels run more quietly, accelerated better, handles better, and is more efficient. The 124 diesels are more "car-like" but are also more complicated.

I agree with you....I never owned a 123 diesel(did own a 85 126 diesel though) but I have driven several....I did however own a 1992 300D at one time(most worryfree car I have ever owned)....truly a huge step over the 123 cars and I am sure that if you really check the maintenance is really not any more(maybe less) than the 123......and you get a car that is more smooth, faster, safer etc........sounds like a no-brainer to me in the 123 versus 124 decision

Plus there are so manay 124 diesels for sale (autotrader.com).

Even the 1995 E300D (the last 124 diesel introduced in 1994) is coming down on its price.

I think the owner realized she made a mistake. I saw the ad again yesterday and the price is $5875.

I called immediately and she told me it had been sold. Oh Boy.

I'm still not phased at 9800... Some of the cars go for 15! It all depends on the car, the owner and uh.... the buyer.....
