Afraid to fall in love... w140 350SDL

It's happened before... even though I should be satisfied with the gentle curves of my faithful partner, I become fixated. Over time, it becomes an obsession, and then a slow-motion crash-course. As it stands, I've got a perfectly good e300d that has been a fantastic car, and my 4runner diesel that is a wonderful mule for dump runs, launching boats and driving into trees.

But a few weeks ago I had an abrupt change of profession, and if it pans out long-term, we're going to need another car about a year from now. Now, being the sensible sort I hit the classifieds right away so I can start mulling over what I should be focusing in on. Thinking maybe I could use the e300d as my daily driver, and pick up a nice w201 diesel wagon for Mrs Notfarnow. Wouldn't that be nice? Yes, it would. And sensible.

Ahhhh... but damn those polished-up ebay w140 diesels. They get me every time, with their wet and waxy shine, their Armor-All'd interiors and their glossy looking tires. I know, I know... I've read all about them. Heartbreakers and homewreckers. But hey, it doesn't hurt anyone if I just look at a few pictures, right? Maybe read up on the specs and service history. New head at 80k? Wonder if they did the con rods... maybe I should call and ask....

Slippery slope, folks. I know I won't be buying a car for at least a year, so I should just stop thinking about it. But this morning, when I was fitting a baby seat in the e300d, I though *just for a second* about how nice it would be to have that extra room in the back.

That's an S350, not a 350SDL. It is in fact the short wheelbase variety of W140. Should have more rear legroom than a W210 but you haven't lived until you've sat in the back seat of an S500. MBUSA didn't offer a long wheelbase S-class Diesel in the US.

Well, not in the W140 anyway...

I wouldn't get a 3.5 my self.

A Year

Gives you just enough time to locate a good OM606 (With a OM603 Mechanical
Injection Pump)and get it fitted into a nice W140!

(Nice Thought) Not Practical for the Supreme Driver and the Progeny...
still a W140 with all the inherent "Lucas like" Electricals.

If it's a 92 or 93 it's a 300SD Turbo (even though it has a 3.5), if it's a 94 or 95 it's an S350 Turbo Diesel.

There are good 350s out there, but they're hard to find and missing the mark can get expensive...

Careful!!! Don't be sucked in by the lifted skirt and perfumed inner thigh of the W140, especially in diesel flavor!!!
I had a Volvo diesel wagon that used to tempt me. So glad I resisted. Although.........

Forget the motor, it would probably cost more money to replace the evaporator on that car. I drive my W124 in fear of the day that happens.

Wouldn't an oil analysis warn you of excessive wear metals if done as part of a PPI?

Yea, but I sniffed the inner thigh!! and took home a '94 S350D. Bought at auction no less. We're up to near 200K now, no smoking, no soot on the rear bumper, it doesn't use more than 1/2qt between oil changes and gets almost 30 on the highway. It's almost a dead ringer for the pic notfarnow posted. There was only about 1000 of them imported (94 & 95) I think so htere's not alot of field experience out there. The electrical system is only outdone by the vacuum system. And one of these days I'll get the AC working properly, MB wants 850.00 for an evaporator, 22 hrs labors to swap. Found one for 180.00 new, just need the courage to undertake the project. Of course the worst part of the whole deal is navigating MB's manuals. If you're still interested nest year, I'm looking to move to a 320 CDI.

alldatadiy.com's online 140 manual isn't bad. Wiring diagrams are randomly paginated so tracing a wire is a PITA. Otherwise the step-by-steps are well presented. I'll bet they can see you through an evaporator replacement.

It's not that the evaporator replacement is daunting, the MB manuals I have on DVD are pretty straight forward, it's just that after turning wrenches on airplanes all the live long day, disecting the Benz is that appealing.
