240D air conditioner compressor carrier

I'm in the middle of replacing the gasket on my 1978 240D (exhaust leak). The three nuts nearest the windshield are rather accessible, but the front two are obscured by the air conditioner compressor bracket that wraps around the corner of the engine. It looks like I have to remove the carrier in order to remove the manifolds, but the bracket looks to be so well connected (ten or so bolts of varying accessibility) that I wonder if that's really necessary.

Which is where you all come in. Anyone who's done the manifolds on a 240D: did you have to remove the air compressor carrier? is there some shortcut I'm missing? Any help is much appreciated.

Andrew
