EGR info needed

I have an 85 300D. Will plugging the line to the EGR help anything? What does it help?

It will reduce the ammount of abrasives in your intake, and give the engine more oxygen to run on. Plug it.

primarily, you want to make an intermediate plate to completely block it off. You can use an aluminum can and cut 2 pieces into the right size and put the egr back on or fabricate a real block off plate and completely remove it.

talk to Brian Carlton for dimensions.

it prevents a dirty build-up in the intake manifold and anything after that etc... on gas engines it is the source of many performance issues.

Better fuel economy, cleaner running engine, less exhaust smoke, longer engine life, less maintenance and less to cause performance issues.

Is there a DIY article or thread with pics to do this? I've read about how good it is on here but I'd like to do it and need the most basic idiot proof instructions with pics if possible.

Maybe I should search myself for it.....

Can you simply just pull the vacuum line off the EGR, disconnect the line from where ever it goes and plug the (I am assuming switchover valve that operates the EGR)?

Will the EGR stay closed then?

Plug the two vacuum lines going to/from the valve cover.

on an 85, they're coming from the driver's side wheel well. no 3/2 switch - it has an electrically controlled one.

Did I hear someone mention "put a BB in the vacuum line and call it a day"?

Not sure about the earlier engines - but on my 606 someone suggested a copper pipe cap 3/4" size ground slightly on the outside fits nicely into the pipe coming off the exhaust manifold. Works like a charm, looks totally stock.

if you have a leaking egr valve, you are avoiding the problems that could be related.

Ohhh..that is true! I might be best served to pull the EGR off and build some form of blocking plates.. My state does not do inspections on Diesels. Yeah Texas!!!

That depends on the age. We live in Hunt county and they are ramping up for the smog testing. Service guy told me the diesels 25 yrs or younger will be inspected, and diesels w/cat converters like our '06 TDI will be smogged.
