87 300SDL Gauges and speedo gone dead
Hello,
All of a sudden, The speedo, tach, and gauges went dead while I was driving. The rest of the electrical system seems OK, as far as I can see. Idiot lights seem to come on, although some may be affected. Gauge illumination light comes on, as do headlights, radio, etc. I can find no blown fuses by visual inspection(all metal strips are continuous). All the fuses are seated. Common glitch and your right its the fuse thats bad. These fuses can be tricky. They might still look to be in one piece but the metal corrodes internally and kills the connection. Go back and replace the fuse and everything will be fine.

The meter may not help. If the fuse ends are corroded (especially the aluminum fuses) they may still conduct a tiny amount of electricity, enough to fool the meter, but they won't conduct enough for a load. The fuses also can have an invisible hairline crack. You need to remove each fuse, inspect it, polish the end with fine sandpaper, emery cloth, or steel wool, replace fuse. better yet, replace all of the fuses with new copper ones. They are not expensive, especially if you buy them from FastLane (click buy parts link at the top of this page, they support the forum).

Before you spend $$ on parts try one simple test. With car running - wiggle your key "left" to "right" slightly and see if your gauges come to life. If yes you need to R/R you ignition switch (not to be confused with ignition cylinder)
