Trans Rebuild Kit
So I have been debating what to do with the trans on my 84 300sd rebuild. Just do the fluid and filter or get in deeper.
I found what looks a seal replacement kit for around $70 on the internet. I think I will do that along with oil and filter and see how it goes. If necessary I can replace the modulator while it is on the car. When I opened the pan, the oil was the proper color, no smell and there were no foriegn objects. Just a very light film on the bottom of the pan. Based on my limited knowledge, I think that means everything should likely be good. If I am misguided about this, please let me know. |

I agree with mobetta. Change the filter and leave it alone.
By the way, I like my tires. --------------------- 1984 MB 300SD Turbo |

How many miles on it? If its 200k or more, it will need a couple clutch's for sure. You don't really need all of them. You can just order what you need when you get in there. The first clutch you pull will probably be all you will need to replace any discs in. The rest will probably be in spec. Don't be too afraid of it, they are pretty simple.

I probably shouldn't comment yet because I haven't finished my rebuild yet, but it seems fairly straightforward. If you are going to go through all the trouble to pull the beast and change the seals , it seems silly not to go ahead and replace the clutches. If it has over 200K, and you want to keep the car for a long time, go for it.

I dont know anything about this trans. Was on a parts car that had much less mileage than mine. How much trouble to get trans off car once engie is installed? I think I would be willing to try this trans out. Mine has 240k on it.

On that car removing and reinstalling runs about as you should expect. Not that difficult. Biggest issue is getting to the bolts on the top of the engine/trans. There are four or five small bolts between the flex plate and the convertor that might give you fits, but nothing out of the everyday frustrations of doing the heavy mechanical work.
