Checking Timing Chain Stretch

Already searched around a bit, but still not sure about where to get the gauge to check timing chain stretch. Is it a mercedes specific tool, or can I get a regular old dial gauge at autozone?

i used a standard 1" dial gauge. i would recommend using the vise grip style mount opposed to the magnetic base style.

WOW! $24.99 and $7.90 shipping also.

If you print out the on line price, the store will honor it.

The EB seller and HF gauge are both made in China.

I don't even attempt to estimate 'stretch' and instead just check the timing. I advance the cam and IP timing about 2° to 4° from specification when I rebuild/repair a 617. This allows the engine to 'stretch' itself into tune rather than out of tune...Robert

Sorry if I ask a stupid question, but how are you measuring chain stretch with a dial gauge? Are you moving the crank back and forth while the gauge is on one of the links? What's the spec? I've done it where the cam is set at zero degrees and the cam then tells how many degrees of stretch are present. Anything past four risks valve/piston contact. Thoughts?

This is not a measure of chain stretch, it is a measure of cam timing...

If you can get a 2" travel dial thats what you want. Otherwise you have to hit the cam at an angle.

LOL, I am pretty sure that is not 2 INCHES...
There are lots and lots of threads in the archives describing how to do this correctly..
Turning the crank back and forth is not recommended ...AND would not in any be related to checking the elongation of the chain.
I think Rick Miley has the reference to the best thread... I always have to ask him for it... he appears to be an information fanatic.... LOL

Yes, but the cam is not directly geared to the crank, it is connected through the chain. Thus as the chain stretches, the cam timing changes as a result. So isn't cam timing a direct indication of the chain stretch? Or is there a compensation mechanism somewhere that is supposed to adjust for this?

Not looking for an argument here, this is something I recall from other forums I've read.

You can get offset woodruff keys for the cam, so its stretch relative to the offset.

Greg emailed me and said he mentioned my name. Of course he knew it would drive me CRAZY until I found this and posted.

Here's my original post, with the links to the the other two threads.
OK, so I'm thinking about changing the timing chain...

Thanks Rick,
I knew you were organized... but until just this week I really did not understand the extent of your ' information retrieval syndrome ' .... LOL
So, 'mentioning you by name' will be placed into my information retrieval procedures from now on... a real work saver for ME....
LOL
