It's a safety feature to keep the seat backs from crushing the front seat occupants in the event of an accident.

Good thing MB decided to make this feature vacuum powered instead of a button on the seat, so when the rubber inside it fails your climate control won't work, your engine won't shut off, and you'll go through the windshield in a crash. 2/3 of those have happened to me

I removed the driver's seat once to get at the vacuum pod inside, but it requires disassembling the seat and I don't have the replacement rubber.

Too true. I love bells and whistles as much as the next person but there's a few things like this that it seems like they deliberately went out of their way to invent a complication.

The folding seat backs are only in the coupes The vacuum diaphrams under the seat keep the backs from falling forward in a collision.
