odometer not working

my 85 300dt odometer and trip odometer are not working properly, if i drive like 400 miles the odometer might register like 23 or 30 miles, and the trip odometer wont reset when i push the reset button, i would really like to fix at least one of them so i can see what kinda mpg i am getting, i read about a slipping gear in some posts but i have no idea where to look for that or how to even access the back of the gauges, do i have to take the whole dash out or do the gauges easily come out? any help on this would be greatly appreciated... thanks- Jason

Well.... I am having a similar problem and could not find much info. here. Lots of text and talk. But, not much in the way of diagrams or pictures on what exactly to do. Most of the search's and threads that I found send you over to DieselGiants site for the repair. I'm surprised there is no pinned tutorial on this here. Actually I'm surprised there are not a lot more pinned tutorials.

If there is an article, maybe it is in the links area? I have yet to find it and don't want to spend "that much time" on the computer looking for it.

TurboSDL. I posted a similar thread a few days ago and got very little response and still have not had some questions answered. So, be prepared for very little if any response. I plan to pull mine today and do the vice grip mod. I'll take some pictures and put them on my thread if I get it all done.

Anyway.... Here is the link to a fix over at DieselGiant:

TX,

Thank you for posting that link! I wish I would have had that a couple days ago.

It gets tough to remember where stuff is sometimes. Heck it took me an hour to find a post I did on removing guage needles with spoons.
