Engine rebuild
I did a compression test on the 77. 2 clyinders were at 220 psi and 3 were at 260 psi. So I am considering rebuilding the lower block or getting one at metric motors. itll be over a grand to rebuild the lower block including the machine work. How is meteric motors? I have many bad experiences with rebuillt engines especially for vws and other makes.

Wow compression numbers like that with only 207K? What sort of history did the car have before you got it?

not sure of reputation with these guys, but stumbled upon them in a search for a short block to replace mine if needed. They are slightly less than Metric.

It appears that he is Swiss and is in bad need of a webmaster. I also noticed that he is selling some of his family heirlooms on the site as well. Maybe the economy is pushing him to extremes. Seems to cover a wide array of goods and services. Basic spelling seems to be a skill genrally lacking on the Internet regardless of nationality.

Yes, ordering an engine from MB is actually a decent price and you'll know you are not getting any aftermarket parts or shortcuts.

Some crate engines are not available from Mercedes. the 617.952 for example is not. I checked with MB before I bought the metric motor engine.
The price has gone up considerably. It all depends how long are you going to keep the car, as the engine is way more than the body is worth. We paid $6000.00 out the door, dropped off the old one and loaded and packed the new one home. have over 13,000 miles on it, and runs great. Charlie |
Your engine may only have stuck rings or bent valves or some other problem that is easily fixed with little $$. I'd tear it down before deciding on a reman block from Metric or MB. 207K is low miles for there to be appreciable cylinder wear.

If you rebuild you block be sure to clean out the coolant core in some way like ' vatting' used to be done at rebuilders...

the body is very good shape for its age as I just finished doing all the patch work which it didnt need much compared to other cars. Regarding the engine im, planning on doing that as a winter project since i wont be driving the car then. I have a few options on this. I can rebuild a turbo motor i have that needs a crankshaft to be machined, bearings, As for the compression on it its still very good. I was thinking of sticking of all the non turbo accersories on it.
i also have an extra non turbo short block that can be rebuilt with about $3000 into it. itll need pistons, sleeves, bearings and possibly connecting rods and a crankshaft. another thing im gonna have to consider the cost to balance engine after im done. So ill look into a few options. I can do the work but its figuring out which will make the most sense in terms of money. |
