Question What's going "ON" with temp gauge

Ok ON my 92 300SD I got three issues same area.

1- Temp gauge is on 80C and then goes to 120C I tap on the glass and goes back down to 80C. Any body knows how to fix the temp gauge? I know the problem is at the dash board, beacuse I move the plate behind the gauge and the nedle moves up and down. Is there any replaceble parts on the gauge?. I do not want to replace the whole board beacause the miles will be different.

2- The temp sensor sending unit at the head block I check for Hms and was reading 56 to 57 Hms, according to the table the temp will be 86 to 87. Is any other way to do another test for accurate temp reading?.

3- Also is the fan clutch, after the car is shut off will take 2-3 seconds to stop. How to test the fan cluch?

Thank you guys in advance for your ideas and advices.

You've just tested it and proved it partially or fully defective compared to a brand new one. Time to replace if you're having temp climbing issues.

That may not be STRICTLY true - on a good hot day after a hot road trip if you get out, with the engine securely shut down and spin the fan by hand, you should feel it resist fairly significantly. If it free-wheels under that condition, it's certainly bad. 2-3 seconds is on the long side of normal but it's not exactly a freewheel either.

I've got enough trouble keeping my older one cool as it is, so I'd change it at that point especially if I had even a hint of summer stuck-in-traffic temperature climbs.

The table was on on of the post earlier. Here it is
60c=110 hms
80c=67 hms
90c=51hms
100c=38hms
I don't know how accurate are this data. My guess is good as yours, my was reading 56-57 = 85c 87c.

Going back to the three issues fan clutch may need to be replace, maybe, perhaps, unless there is other ways to test it. Temp gauge still an enigma. How to get the accurate temp from the block or coolant using a secondary device. any sugestions?
