Auxiliary fan runs all the time...

on my 300SD. As soon as I turn the key to fire up the glow plugs, the fan is kicking hard. This is not normal, correct? Normally it only kicks on when the engine gets to a certain temperature?

The vehicle runs/drives great and never gets over 80C. Please advise.

No, that's not normal. Check to see if maybe the previous owner hotwired the fan to be on all the time- this was the case with my car when I got it. He had a wire running from a connection near the A/C drier to the fusebox.

I could be wrong, but I think usually if the fan is suffering some sort of malfunction, it will not run, vs. run all the time. Unless for some reason your temp switch got stuck open.

Gene, that is a possibility. Where should I start looking?

Per the manual it is one of the relays in the fuse box. The manual I have doesn't have a diagram showing which relay is which, though.

The quick and dirty test is to just swap the relay with another one and see whether it continues to run when cold. If the relay is good then the problem is probably one of the following three:

1) Temp switch (as was mentioned)
2) A/C switch (by the dryer is I am reading the manual correctly)
3) Short in the fuse box.

Test the two switchs with a voltmeter and see if the output line has +12V between it and ground.

Check the temperature sending unit on the thermostat housing. I had one that was grounded all the time, regardless of temperature. If you pull the wire off, the fan should stop....Robert

On my 91 this isn't the case. If you unplug the two pin temp sensor the fans come on to their high speed.
