If in sun, also in rain = rust?????

Buy at parts car price because all systems will need work. Current owner obviously isn't going to repair.

If it runs and is in typical "daily driver" condition, asking price would be about $4K or slightly more in CA. I have spent a lot (too much?) time on CL lately looking at these sorts of things. Once the odometer passes 200,000, the asking prices seem to be closer to $3K. If it doesn't run, it is worth $500-$1000 as a parts car. Occasionally I see ads for nonrunning cars that ask for $1500, but I suspect the owner's don't get that much money.

+1. A 158k car in good shape would possibly be worth a nice premium if kept well, but for this, there is too much work involved. If everything is shot, i wouldnt pay more than $1k. What do you think youre going to get out of it anyway? I wouldnt trust a repainted car from a rust protection point of view.

thanks for the reminder of the strip party epic... no I am not planning on storing the car in my yard... I have a customer needing a good turbodiesel vehicle, and this fits IF I can get it affordably.
I computed the value of the vehicle with everything pristine... at around 4K
I then removed the seats from the value, the dash from the value, and the tires as well.
I figured the paint job at a decrease in value of 800.00...
the seats around 1000.00 the dash at 400 and the tires around 500...
subtract the $2700 and I'm left with 1300.
this is if the engine and transmission check out.
the car has a NEW MB axle and the original has good boots still.
the car is sitting facing the sun, no trees around, so the drains should be relatively clear... hopefully there is no rust in the problem areas...
if the car starts fine, and the transmission shifts well... I may offer this price, but if ANY issues are present in the drivetrain, I'll offer around 600 -900...
oh, the door locks are inoperable according to the owner as well... likely an actuator, or a connector bad... 1-300$ off...

Sounds like you are in the ballpark. I was thinking it was a $500 to 750 car.

Find out what he thinks. My SD started at $3000. Another potential buyer declined because it wouldn't run over 50 mph. I expected filters & bought it at $1500. It needs more than they said but will be a good car. $3k owould have been too much.

I always discount for what I don't see or what the seller doesn't admit. If the repairs are so minor, let the PO do it and I'll give him his price. $500 to $700 unless it is better than you have described. You won't see all of the rust until you take the floors to metal and pull the trunk carpet and wheel well liners.

Any over spray makes the paint job (more) suspect. I'd rather have bad original paint than fresh paint of unknown quality.

much less

I've learned that when I go to see some of these old cars that I have to buy it as cheap as I can. $500 - $700 might be a good offer.
