How much fluid should I put back in? should I fill it until the dipstick gets to the full mark when cold?

And then start the car, put it through the gears, and with it still running check the level. It will probably be low.

Should I then top it back up with the car running up to max again?

You run it through reverse and drive and check the level in neutral, right?
I find it difficult because when I look at the stick, it's all covered with oil 6 inches on both sides. I try to put it in real quick and sometimes get 6 inches of oil on one side, but the other side will stop somewhere between the marks.

Fine, if you run a $700 beater.
Not a good idea if one has invested money and time restoring an old timer or young timer MB. Then again, someone who owns a 6.3 knows better than to listen to some of poor advice given here.

Despite Jerry's obvious determination to p!ss off everyone he can with that last comment and his signature, I agree. Wal-Mart ATF/oil is fine to keep you going, but I wouldn't use it in anything I really care about.
