I failed my inspection today for my car . the reverse lights come on only some of the times. .All other lights work and the bulbs are good. Fuse is good. Any direction to start at would be appreciated.

I removed the shift cover and when I shifted it seamed like it worked in an exact position but a slight deviation, not another gear, would turn them off. underneath the bushings are good and the same thing happens. does it seem like a link adjustment to anyone or something else. Thanks

It could be in your nutral safety switch, the contacts are dirty or worn.
there 2 wires for the start and 2 for the reverse lights.

I think they are rivited together, so not sure if it can be taken apart and cleaned.

see if the connector to the NSS is firmly connected. the pins on the connector could also be dirty or corroded.

Backup lights

You do not say which type of transmission you have. If manual, there is a backup light switch near the base of the shift column. Either your switch is faulty, or it has loosened from it's mount and is not contacting the shift column in reverse position. Not sure of automatic trans. funtion.

Problem solved. After removing a shift link and neutral safety switch (NSS) off of a parts cat I'm parting out on ebay, I saw that the screw in pic 1 labeled 1 had loosened allowing the metal prongs in pic 2 to misalign. I adjusted it to the position that was on my parts cars nss that I had removed. By the way there is nothing under the shift console that could cause this problem, unless the shifter bushings were to become worn out. Then you'd have shifting problems. That's from past experience. I've had to rebuild automatic and manual shifters when the shift bushings went out. I'm not talking about linkage bushings. Email me if I can help anyone with the same problem. Oh by the way the linkage is suppose to ne bent like in previous pic's. Ray Sorry about the bad pictures I had to use my scanner.
