Well I'm about to install my inline fuse upgrade for the blower/AC so I checked it out.

Oh, late cars also have a large, dual speed fan too.

Indeed, many of the gadgets on my '87 300D Turbo (W124, OM603) are the same as those that first appeared on my '85 300D-T (W123, OM617): the "blue flying saucer" control of transmission vacuum, the OVP relay, the Klima relay for a/c control, the EGR brain (which on the 603 also controls idle speed) and its vacuum solenoids. Many of these items carry part numbers beginning with "601" because they were introduced on the 1984 190D (W201, OM601).

I believe the 1985 also has a higher torque converter stall speed as well.

I've heard that, but it's been so long since I've owned my '84 300D I can't comment. I wish the converter was looser how the one in my SDL acts.

I just buy 1984 MY parts for mine unless it's something specific. Otherwise I end up with major components for an '85 CA car. Don't ask.

Interesting thread. So can you easily put an '85 transmission into an '83?

Something else I just found out the other day. The Aux. fan will come on with the A/C off on the 85. If you are doing a lot of idling in stop and go traffic the Aux. fan comes on to supplement the engine driven fan. The temp's. never go above 85/90 on the gauge though.

I have noticed that my uncles 83 model does not do this.
