84 300SD caliper seals
Just wondering what the "o" rings in the brake calipers (between the halves) are made of. Are they flat rings or are they actual rubber o rings? Thanks

![]() B/C those seals are basically nonexistent. I'd just assume buy reman calipers, but whatever floats your boat.

caliper O Rings
Quote:
I don't know why everytime this subject comes up somebody says to not take them apart. I just rebuilt my whole brake system on my 240D about three weeks ago. To me if a part has bolts in it, it is made to come apart. When I am rebuilding a part I like to take the whole assembly apart and clean everything really good. Trying to clean everything with them together just does not work for me. When they are apart it makes installing the new kits a lot easier. I use the same size O ring (the fat size) as the ones that came out of them. I have done this more than once and I have never had a leak from them. Tork the bolts to about 75 lbs and use blue thread locker.

Thanks Joe, I feel the same way. Bolts are made to be taken off. So you are using regular rubber o rings? Doesn't brake fluid eat rubber, or am I mixed up?

Well I have one of those industrial O ring kits.
![]() Yes they are rubber but not the cheap kind you would get at Autozone. Not much of the O ring is actually exposed to the brake fluid. The ones you took out were rubber to, just 20 plus years old. I have also just reused the old ones if they are not in to bad shape.Did you notice that there is a machined line from the O ring hole to the outside of the caliper. If you would ever have a leak that is where it would show. You could also use the Vitron (Green Ones). for peace of mind if you want .They are impervious to anything
