99 E300 722.6 trans compatability

Greetings.. I have a 99 E300.. trans is done. I am looking for a used replacement but I have heard some of the 722.6 trans out of these cars have different internal gear ratios. If you get the wrong trans, you will get a check engine light. I am wondering if this is true, and can it be resolved with replacing the TCM with the matching transmission? Anyone know if any 98-99 trans will work definitively? Thanks, John
