Run away Diesel
I have been around Diesel engines since 1959 and have never experienced a 'run-away.'
In fact I don't even know of anyone who has had a run away. I am just wondering if anyone in the forum has any first hand experience with a run away. What are the odd? I currently have two Diesels, a MB 240D and an Isuzu P'up (2.2l Diesel) and carry nothing to stop a run away. what should I carry with me to stop a run away? bob 1981 240D |

Search the forums and you will find some runaway stories, some with unpleasant endings. Something to stop the air entering the intake is good. A rag, a plastic bag, a board, a CO2 fire extinguisher.

I remember Larry's story. That was back in the old days before my 83 gor ruined and I was on here daily. There is a lot of good info in that thread!

I bought a NEW 1980 VW Dasher diesel wagon that had a 1.5ltr engine. At about 80,000 miles, It would start to run away with itself. It usually happened after pulling a long grade and on the back side, downhill, it would start. What would happen was very eery! I would be coasting down the hill in 4th and the engine would start to get VERY noisy-clattery and pick up speed and POWER. You would look in the rear view mirror and see a white smoke screen that ANY battle field commander would be proud of!! The only way I could get it to stop was to apply the brakes to slow it down. It would then stop HARD dieseling and run like nothing ever happened.
What caused the problem was that the 1.5 engine had a SMALL crankcase breather passage through the cylinder head to the valve cover. The blow-by would go through the passage at high speed and right into the intake air box via the valvecover. The engine was running on its own lubricant. Also when it "Hard dieseled" it would create even more blow-by thus fueling the engine even more. Turning off the key did NOTHING. If I had clutched it, the engine would have wound to destruction because it wasn't speed goverened by the inj pump. I fixed the problem by making an external crankcase vent by-pass. NEVER had that problem again. When I wore that engine out, I put a new 1.6 diesel and a 5 speed out of an AUDI 4000 diesel. Man What a car it was to drive then. I could get 44mpg. I drove that car 19 years..... With fuel prices, I wish I had it back!!!

Mate of mine drove his Kia Sorento through a dyke, only the bow wave came back over the bonnet into the engine, complete with a bucketload of silt. He got it out, only to find the engine wouldn't stop. It eventually redlined after a few minutes, and died painfully.
I wasn't there so I couldn't show him how to stop it, but Kia gave him a new engine anyway FOC ![]() |

An idiling diesel near gas vapors such as propane or natural gas can also cause a runaway.

So, I'm a bit confused. Why not keep a good hose cutter handy, and cut the fuel supply line? If there were a lot of gas vapors around, yeah, I guess it might keep going. But it seems like you just take out the fuel and you have a dead engine.

From what I can tell you need a really horrendous oil leak/consumption problem to have a runaway.

The main cause of runaway is an external, uncontrolled fuel source. Another possibility is a failure in the injection pumps governor. Installing the shutoff actuator incorrectly can push the fuel rack and cause a runaway as well.
All three can be stopped by cutting off the engines oxygen supply. However, in a truly uncontrolled run-away, the safest option is to leave the area immediately to prevent bodily harm to yourself if it decides to throw parts. Chances are, by the time you get to the extinguisher, pull it's pin, get back to the engine, aim, and squeeze the trigger, the engine is way past the point of safe return. Go out (on a warm engine) floor the accelerator without a load on the engine and see how quickly is revvs to redline. Try it with even 1/2 throttle. That's how quickly it can loose control, especially with an IP malfunction or external fuel source where it's revv's are no longer limited. Cutting the fuel supply on the latter two problems can stop the engine, but the remaining fuel inside the pump, lines, filter and injectors is plenty to destroy an engine. |

I experienced first hand a run away diesel many years ago in a 1989 Peugeot 504 diesel sedan where the injection pump main shaft seal leaked diesel fuel into the crankcase. I was driving to work one winter morning going about 30 MPH when the car suddenly accelerated on it's own (as I recall, it felt like full throttle). My heart was thumping. Shut the key off but it kept accelerating. I used the brake and left it in 2nd gear (manual), slowed down and was able to stall the engine. I didn't know WTF was going on at the time and found out later by talking to the dealer.
