ignition key hard to turn 240D

A couple of months ago, I couldn't get the ign key to turn to the start position (spring loaded position). I have since wired up a small push button/relay to the starter solenoid and that is working fine to start the car. This cold morning (about 15F), I had a lot of problems getting the key to turn at all. After about 5 minutes trying, it finally turned and I was able to start the car. What's going on? Do I need a new ign switch or is it the steering lock? Should I try lubricating it? If so, with what? WD-40? Dry graphite powder? Lock-ease?

You need to leave the ignition in the on position and get a new tumbler. If you lock the switch again and it doesn't unlock you will have more money and more work ahead of you.

These are the warning signs of either the tumbler (most likely) or ignition housing is going south.

Agree. Order a new cylinder from the dealer, cut for your VIN number. Take a copy of your title or proof of ownership when you do order. If the key locks up it's a real drag trying to drill out the old cylinder. Alan

Use steel keys.

The problem could be any of the above. What I recommend doing is removing the tumbler, disassembling the steering lock and soaking/cleaning all of it.

I believe its cheaper to take them to a decent locksmith and have them refinish.

The tumbler is a 5 minute job. Remove it, then check to see if it opperates properly when in your hand out of the car, if it sticks that is your problem, if it works fine then your problem is the steering lock which is a bit more involved.

It seems to vary between $50 and $100 depending on the dealer and which car you have.
