617.95 Fan Clutch

It look like the time has arrived to renew the radiator fan clutch on my '82 300D. I see that there is a Meyle clutch available for around 40% of the cost of a Behr unit. Anyone have any insight into the reliability of the Meyle part? I am mindful of the fact that saving money is not always cost effective.

Also, has anyone "upgraded" their metal fan to the lighter, nylon version?

I refilled mine with the Toyota fan clutch silicone. It has worked fine ever since.

Do a search. There is a long thread on that. You remove the clutch and on the front of the clutch there is a bolt you remove to fill it. Pretty cool. The thread is worth checking out.

Tango... FYI, I put the Meyle clutch on my car back in Feb. I have had no issues with it. It looks almost Identical to the BEHR unit.

The engine temp. rides in the same place on the gauge. Not too sure about the long term though. I have already put over 7,000 miles on it. I'd say go for it.

Okay, thanks. I think I will give the Meyle unit a shot.

My fan has too much runout for that option.

No reason whatsoever to stick with the older metal fan over the newer plastic fan. The plastic fan moves quite a bit more air and is lighter. Quick R&R.

Except the additional $200+ it would cost.

Are you sure that model is for the metal fan? I am under the impression that there is a different clutch for each fan.

ps - all the fans I have witnessed have that wobble to some degree.

Meyle make clutches for both the metal and plastic fans. The version applicable to the plastic fan has a considerably higher price tag.
