'98 E300 AC question...

While the car is off the road and I'm replacing the radiator, I decided to poke around (literally) with the AC system and see if thee are any leaks that I can find while I have room to work.

I (foolishly) decided to give a press on the high pressure fitting to check the valve and see if there was any charge left in the system since I have a slow leak somewhere. Well, a stream of green snot shot out, ricocheted off my hand and onto my face and bare chest. I toweled off and just for grins, I put on the yellow goggles and shined the UV light on myself. I looked like an ax murderer with blood splattered all over me.

Anyway, My leak kit only has 1/4 oz of detection fluid for each application. It seems like much, much more was in the lines judging by how much shot out. I think that the same ham-fisted mechanic that "fixed" my snapped GP with a bolt, also worked on the AC.

So, is it possible that so much dye was injected into the system that it's operation is inhibited now? I guess the only way to tell is to suck the system dry and recharge it with the proper amount of gas...

Will a recovery machine pull all the oil and mess out of the system too?

Thanks for your input!

The dye mixes with oil. You shot out a bunch of the oil.

A recovery machine will not remove the rest of the oil; well, not much of it anyway. Unless you can guess how much oil you lost, you will have to flush the system to bare metal and start again.

It was just a quick shot. Eventually, I'll have to replace the evaporator so I'll flush and re-fill at that time.

Man, if you;re in the dash as far as you are, why not do the evap now?

Too much oil is not good for the system at all.

Evan, I would say, if it ain't broke... Don't touch it. Even if the coil were to go bad, I don't think there is much under the hod they would touch, other than access to the AC high/low ports.... But what do I know
