Transmission Noise

My 1985 300TD California transmission seems to have gotten louder in the 2nd gear under load and a bit louder in 3rd as well. Fourth sounds OK. The sound is just like the light whine(only louder) in 1st if you shift and hold it in first. About 6k miles ago I serviced the transmission and got some chunks of brass looking metal out of the pan. It still shifts good and other than the louder noise seems OK. My neighbor looked at the chunks and said it was OK if it was still shifting good and the chunks were from hard shifting. I do have access to a 1983 with a good trans and diff for $300. Should I drive it till it drops? Will that trans work in my California car?
