Smile 85 300D new Sound...

Ok so your going down the highway. With few cars hear ya. Then if you cut the wheel to the right to change lanes the car momentarily tilts to the left before moving right. As the weight of the car tilts left there is this sound that appears to come from the right front but I have no proof of this. The sound is only occuring when the car is tilted left or in a left hand lean. The Sound remind me of the sound one makes blowing air across those old glass Coke bottles when some of us was kids.

I've wondered could it be caused due to weight being lifted off the right shock or added to the left shock ?

I've wondered could it be a wheel bearing ?

So any ideas ? or perhaps someone else has heard something like this ?

Well you could start by comparing sides by spinning the wheels and holding a finger on a spring to see if there is any roughness in the bearings. Or differences from one side to the other.

Also check for excess play by trying to move the tire from side to side. Both sides should check out the same. Still does not absolutly prove it is a wheel bearing one way or another. It just might be though as the axial loading changes when you start that turn also the weight loading has changed a little as well.

Its hard to say. I would probably start looking for worn out rubber pieces. I know I have virtually no guide rod mounts left, and my ball joints are clunky on both sides, it wouldn't surprise me if something was pretty much un-lubricated or clogged with dirt, etc. Visual inspection would be my number one.

Yes it could be a wheel bearing too....they are easy to get at in the front if you do any brake work.

Edit: important question - does it ONLY happen when the car leans, or is it when the car goes around a corner slowly? The wheel bearings should make noise regardless of "lean", but more when pressure is put on them from turning. You're associating the lean with the noise, but perhaps it could be inner or outer pressure on the bearing rather than the car leaning. After hearing it, feel the hub when you get home - see how hot it is...usually a good indication of a failed WB.

Additional observations

Ok using my infrared Temperature gun it appears that the right Hub is maybe 10-20 degrees more then the left one.

I'm going to try and inspect a bit more and let ya know.

Wonder what a garage would charge me to replace the bearings on the front ?

More

Got the front off ground.
Tried to move wheel at 12 and 6 and if its doing anything I can't tell. Later I'll get my old man to double check me .

I took the right front wheel off to look around a bit.
Thing I noticed was the brake might be a little more drag-y on the right front then on the left front. So I'm figuring this might be creating the additional amount of heat I notice with my temp gun.

I popped the grease cap off and looked around but all I could see was grease , grease and bearings. Looked ok to me but I've only seen a few of these so I ain't no doctor nor do I play one on TV.

I'm thinking that one of these days I might need to flush the brake system and maybe clean the brake pistons so they are smoother bothways. I use to do this on my older motorcycles as they would gum up and do nothing but tighten .

When you say Rubbing do you mean the brakes or something else ?

A Change...

Ok Originally I felt this sound was coming from the Front Right.

Well this weekend I had my dad double check my eval of the Bearings and he concurs that it seems fine.

Additionally we rotated the tires.

Now on my Drive home, 50 miles, I can swear that the sound still occurs as I indicated previously when the Car is leaned to the Left however it now is from the Rear and I believe the Left Rear. It only appears to happen on a road that is siliently pitched to the left and when my speed is say 60 or higher.

I think now it might be a tire sound of some kind. The tires that are now on the rear are the older pair . The current front tires are a different make set of tires and less then a year old. Rear have over 30K miles on them and are BF Goodrich and the Front tires now are Douglas tires I got from Wally world to replace the previous BF Goodriches.
