I did it 77 300d

I finally found a 77 300D to replace my 300SD.
A lot different, So a few questions to begin with

This seems to have a climate control, but not like the 83 SD. Does it work the same? the heater hoses are disconnected, and I did not see a monovalve, or a aux pump. Did this car have those? I got to get that hooked up.

Car runs great, but there is a large flare when shifting in all gears, Vacuum related? holds once in gear fine.

Seems to have a 3 speed auto? top speed about 75 on the free way,
Seems to be a good running car. Just could not afford the price wanted for the SD around here.

thanks
Doug

search evil servo for the climate control. I think these start in second gear too. Try doing the manual shift. Should be a four speed. I never got my 77 running, so can't be too much help.

it has the chrysler Imperial climate control that chrysler had dumped recently and mercedes picked up for use in their cars. The system isnt very reliable and is expensive to repair. A pushbutton unit can run $700 and the servo will run around $300 or $400. No monovalve, auxillary pump. I ended up ripping out the chrysler imperial system and a put in a manual climate control from a 240D. You cant manual shift these automatic trannies ether...

It's the evil servo. Best bet is to sign up for some training in voodoo in order to keep it running.

In your dreams. A new one costs at least $1600, rebuilts are around $600 but there is a solid state replacement.
The servo system still has an auxilliary pump.

It will start in 2nd gear. To get it to start in 1st gear, engage the kickdown switch, or put it in first, or put it in first and then shift back into D while at a stop.

I have a 77 300D too. It has the dreaded climate control servo like everyone states.
The shifting with this transmission is not controlled by vacuum like the later models. It's controlled by a mechanical modulator and a metal shift linkage connected to the throttle linkages. You can shift them manually. Start out in L(1st), then shift up to S(2nd, it will shift on it's own to 3rd), then into D(4th). I've been having to do this on my 77 because the flaring is pretty bad. Hopefully a fresh filter and fluid will help then I will adjust the linkage and modulator.

wait ur top speed is only 75mph. Something isn't right, make sure the pedal linkage is adjusted properly and that its hitting the stop on the IP. My W115 1976 300D(OM617.910) will cruise at 80 MPH just fine, with some pedal left.

man,
I hope I did not make a mistake.

The change to the 300 was because it was the only car in my price range. Less than 1K. that was not total crap.
The car sounds like it is running high revs at 75, so maybe I am not going into 4th?
I got to do a valve adjustment, and then oil and filters,
then on to the heater.

The 300D n/a has a higher rear end than the turbocharged so expect it to rev 3000 rpm @ 60 and 3700 @ 75, flairing is useally low tranny fluid or it's tome for a tranmy oil and filter change, these cars has 4 gears, it starts at 2 nd gear b/c it suppose to save fuel.... And also back then highway speed limit was 55 mph and the cars engine rpm = +- 2500 Rpm. As far as climate control they are probally the worst type ever placed in a Mercedes I would jury rig it if it dose not work
