W210 Jammed sunroof

The sunroof on my 210 will now pop up but jams(?) when I attempt to open it. Any suggestions on where I should start troubleshooting? I know, I know $1000 at the dealer. I'm trying to avoid that!

Does it open part way or not at all? Mine would get stuck about 1/4 of the way open. It was the fault of the cable guides which were allowing the cables to pop out. They have been redesigned with 2 screws instead of 1. You need to "help" the sunroof all the way open by pushing on the leading edge while you press the open button. Once it is open you will see the plastic cable guides about 1/2 way down the track. If yours are held in place with one screw go to the dealer and pick up the new part and all should be right.

This thread has some photos of the part I am talking about:

Thanks Marty,
Mine jams immediately, the back doesn't even drop low enough to clear the roof. I haven't tried to "help" it. I'm afraid of getting it open and it not closing. I can live without the sroof but it would be nice if it worked.

Just for kicks try holding the button in the close position for a few seconds and see if you don't have a sync problem unless you are sure it is a mechanical binding that is causing it.

Thanks for the input. I tried to reset the roof... no luck. Now I do notice a definite unfriendly noise when I attempt to open the sroof. Still won't drop enough to clear the roof.

After trying it a few more times it will open about an inch. Should I try to help it along?

I'd try that, but do so before it starts to bind, from the very start of movement. It is probably the cables jumping out of the track at the guide. Of course you always risk it getting stuck open but now you can probably figure out how to get it closed or fixed with the help of those videos.
