Engine rotation on a 81 240D Please?

I am just getting prepared to adjust the valves on my 81 240D which I've done a few times before but I can't seem to remember which way the engine rotation is. The manual I have and shopforum all mention clockwise, but for some reason I can't remember if this means looking at the engine from the front to back or if it means sitting in the car and looking forward.

I assume it means looking from the front of the car which means that the top of the cam goes from passenger side to drivers side??? That would be clockwise right?

I think I thought about it too much and it jusut seems funny that they would strike the rocker arms from this direction in a sort of "push" against the rocker.

Clarification greatly appreciated!

Also, do you use the crank bolt or P steering bolt to turn the engine?? I always remove the fan and use the crank nut but I've seen suggestions otherwise.

Will

With the hood open and you looking at the engine, turn clockwise, or the cam lobe towards the driver side.
I use a momentary bump switch available from any auto parts store for around $15. Hook it up to the first and last wire inside the small black plastic box on the passenger inner fender, right in front of the battery.
I will suggest against using the PS bolt.

The engine can and will start using the bump switch. it can be exciting when it starts with the valve cover off.

Either apply vacuum to the shut off at the Injection Pump, or wire the stop linkage back.

I generally remove the throttle linkage with the valve cover. is there a way to get the same stop function with the linkage removed?

if you connect the vac line from the shut off valve directly to the vacuum pipe it can only run for second or two if it does start
