speedo switch question

today my daughter calls and says her dash of her 87 300d is ticking every few seconds in town and ticks more at highway speeds.her speedo was ticking every tenth of a mile.,assuming the gears are making the noise i took the speedo out and didnt know how to remove the needle to get to the gears.i took the speedo from a 88 190d i have in the yard.it fit and it works ...the original is 140mph and the 190 i put in is 120.will the 120mph i put in be accurate?

Rear end ratio is what matters. IIRC your 300d uses 2.65 and the 190's usually have 3-point-something. Meaning it will be off.

I also noticed that the speedos sometimes have a K number sticker on the back, you can use that to match ratios as well (the K number is not literally the ratio though).

Usually a firm press on the trip meter reset button will fix the ticking. Then stop pressing it while the car is moving!

Yeah,and a "Caution",or two.

Gently,Gently,Gently pull the needle off of the shaft with tweezers or a small
set of needle nose pliers.(You need to remove the "Speedo" head from inside the "Cluster" ,First)
[This is not an Enterprise with a Happy Ending,99% of the time.It can be done
BUT you're messing around in "Watchmaker Territory" here]

The Caution: Moving the position of the needle on the shaft WILL NOT result
in Re-Calibration of the Speedometer's readout.
[I.E. No Way to Make a 120MPH Speedo out of a 140MPH one ,OR Vice Versa]
