Chains in the wheels?

I have an 84 300D.

When I come into work , i have to stop and show ID.....

I have the window down, and as I accelerate , I'm hearing a sound that is a lot like a chain is in the tire. Its a "cling...cling....cling" type of sound.

Even though it sounds like it is in the right rear tire, it could be elsewhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Check your rear axle boots to see if any of them are ruptured.

The boot on the right rear, just off the differential is cracked all around. Its not covered in grease (yet).

A coworker who is a major car DIY says its called the stub axle, says its easier to take it to the shop to repair it.

Options?

My guess would be brake hardware, or swaybar links, as I had both of those make clinking noises, particularly going over bumps.

Solution: Take the chain out of your tire.

Sorry, too easy!

I had something similar once, turned out to be broken parking brake shoes rattling around in the rear hub.

Is there enough redundancy to hold the car with one break?
I'll look at it tonight!

Depending on a number of factors maybe, but mine never worked on that car. It was pretty rough, I didn't do anything about it.

Could be a rock caught in the brake caliper....

Is that what is making the noise?
Mine are cracked too, no issues yet.
