The stock 3.07 is pretty much it then.

A 2.88 will make for slow acceleration from a stop. The cars with it have an extra low 1st gear to compensate.

In my 85 , I have the 2:88. I have yet to drive anything else, but I can attest that my car is slow off the line until the Turbo spools. Otherwise I feel that my car has the best w123 setup of them all.

Personally, I would stick a manual tranny in there. But that's more money for another day and I don't even have that right now :(

Not sure about the extra low first gear, The Cali version with the 722.416 probably has a little bit lower first gear. The Feds stayed with the 722.303 and 722.315 and it has the same ratio as the previous 722.3x. But for 1985, both trans started in First Gear. Along with the higher stall speed torque convertor, this helped with the taller diff gear.

I got a really good 2:88. It is amazingly tight compared to mine. THANKS daw_two!!! Also another thanks to DeliveryValve and Brian Carlton for the transmission adjustment help!

I was under the car today and was doing some "seat of the pants" tests before I tear into it. If I hold one of the inner CV cans and gently twist the pinion shaft (car in neutral), I can get a 1/2 inch of play out of it. On the new one the same test has barely 1/32 of an inch play. Also twisting the cans against each other shows a lot of play on mine and almost none on the replacement.

I can't wait to get it in there. I got it all cleaned up and painted today. Just waiting for the new seals.

Also, I would like to give the CV's a squirt of that special grease. Is there any special place to buy that stuff or will any generic CV grease work?

I keep telling people that this car was well taken care for....everything I've sold off this car has been nice thus far:
center wood console to Tyler
rebuilt ACC to Squabble
wiper stalk and relay to Imbroke
rearend and axles to you!!!

It's really too bad this car got hit in the back.....but look at all the other cars that live on from it being a donor.

Do this Tom, next tank of fuel change your driving habits. Start off in 2nd gear, shift to 3rd quickly before the engine nears its peak torque. Do the same 3-4, 4-5th. In addition to the crankcase oil temp rising I'm betting your fuel mileage drops.

Those things might impact around town mileage. Highway mileage is what I was speaking of. My gear setup is so tall taking off in second would just be ridiculous.
