I read some mention of a VIN search site here some time ago. Can someone give me a link, or interpret this VIN for me?

Wow, the MB russian club decoder tells me this:

Datacard for VIN WBB1231231A122851 is not found
1) VIN was misspelled in the request form;
2) VIN was erroneously read from vehicle body or documents;
3) VIN is not of an original vehicle and was forged by criminals;
4) The vehicle was produced in late 2005 or 2006, and is not included yet in our database

maybe the second letter should be a D ???

The EPC site is the factory site for VIN info and parts. It'll ask for a credit card number, but it's free and the # is just to verify you're in the US. I don't really know why that matters. http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/

But...your car will probably show up as invalid there, too. You can try an end-run, and contact the M-B classics center directly. When I tried to register my US-spec '83 300CD, the site said "not recognized, contact our center..." I did that and got an e-mail from MB USA that said "your car's old...contact these guys..." You may be able to request info from classicparts@mbusa.com

I'd suggest taking a pic of your data plate and sending it to them. It's on the radiator support and has a bunch of 3 digit codes that match your factory build information, color, interior, etc.

Or, from the VIN, W = made in West Germany, BB (DB?)was the code for Mercedes (probably DB = Daimler-Benz) and 123123 is body+engine type or a 240D with a 616.912 engine; and I can't help with the rest. On the EPC site you can select 123 123 and it'll give you model specific info for parts.

I agree w/daw_two, "WDB" means Mercedes-Benz. "WBB" may not mean anything at all.

I heard somewhere that WDB stands for "world data base" number. 0.02

False.

W= Made in Germany
DB= Daimler-Benz (DC for Daimler-Chrysler after 1999)

except for the central locking system, everything checks out if the second B is replaced with D. White on blue, power sunroof etc. But it has manual locks. I got the VIN from the seller over the phone so I could add it to my ins. before picking it up tomorrow. Don't know what the transmission numbers mean. It's a 4 speed. I'll know tomorrow. Just hope I didn't buy some car stolen 25 years ago....

Specific info for your car will be on the data plate in the engine bay. The three digit codes will have things like "delete Central Locking" or "Stereo model Becker Europa" or "Gran Prix"

WBB 'might' be correct if you bought a euro Blue Bird truck...not likely, but who knows, maybe it's a rare classic...you may want to double-check with your insurance company. You may have lucked into a number sequence that has a valid check-sum but mis-ID's your car.

Ok trying to get my German Spec Mercedes figured out so that I can get it running a little smoother and with a lil better mileage than 14.5 MPG. The VIN that i got from the plate is WDB1240261B049767. Trying to figure out the engine number for a few parts orders.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know when I got the car it had a little green data sheet with all of the relevant info. But I think it got thrown away while cleaning out the previous owners garbage.
Love this car so far. First MB and definitely has me sold on another one.
