w140 S280... 602 transplant. :)

i have a lead on a 2.9L 602 engine. I'm planning on installing it in a recently submerged w140. I know it'll be an easy enough swap... i'm not so sure though how i'll get the gauges to work... as the w140 is almost all electronic.

Temp, fuel, speedo, rpm... how do i hook them all up again?
The tranny MAY be an issue because of different shift points.

Speedo hooks to the transmission, fuel to the fuel tank. They won't be disconnected, I assume.

There's a good chance that the temp, oil and tach sensors are the same. Look out for the mechanical oil guage.

W126 + s classes don't have a mechanical oil pressure gauge, there is an electronic sender at the oil filter.

Does the 602 have mechanical throttle like the 603 or electronic throttle like the later 606?

What transmission does the S280 have? The 722.5 and 722.6 transmission controllers link to the ECU. IIRC without proper signals, the 722.5 will shift from 3rd to 5th bypassing 4th. You'll need a standalone module for the 722.6 unless the electronics of the 602, if available, are compatible.

You might have to run a wire from the EDS module or whatever is the equivalent of that 602 directly to the tach. Hopefully there are wiring diagrams available to make the necessary connections.

Seeing as it's a 2.9l instead of the usual 2.5l I'm wondering if this engine even came from a Benz.

Then there's the gasser vs diesel deal, I'm sure that's a whole bunch of other issues (ignition? glowplugs?).

The 2.9 was a successor to the 2.5 like the 3.5 was to the 3.0. Maybe even the same bore and stroke which makes rod integrity suspect. Pretty common to see E290s in Europe. Same engine was available in the G290.

i'm pretty sure the 602 is all mechanical... not 100% sure yet though. It'll come from a locally available VAN... its actually a korean van from ssangyong, MB licensed the 602 engine to them... and yeah... since it's a 2.9 it'll have the same bore and stroke as the 3.5L... did they ever find what causes the rod bending? i've never heard of any 602 rod issues as far as the vans are concerned. i'm still doing research on the engine...
i'm at a loss as far as the tranny is concerned... i may have to swap that one too if it's going to be a hassle electronic-wise. i'd rather get a mechanical one... would one from an m103 be completely compatible?

thanks guys... need all the opinions i can get.

nope... just confirmed it... no computers for the korean 602... still uses a pre-combustion chamber like the old 602. it's pretty much a re-bored standard 602
