Are various engine related bolts still available...as new?
Is it still possible to buy new replacement MBZ bolts..misc bolts holding various engine parts and things together? Or are we left to just trying to cleanup the ones we have or visit the local pickinpull for a replacement?

Even if you can't get ones from the dealer a quality hardware store should be able to get any normal fastener on the car.

But they are not cheap from the dealer!
I just paid $0.75 each for the tiny 3 bolts that hold the thermostat cover on, and $3.30 for a bolt to hold the door striker on! Adds up quick! But what else can you do? Most people can't tell you what size they are so you could get them elsewhere . . . even the parts guy can't/won't tell you the size! (just the price!)

I just replaced the 3 thermostat cover bolts from home depot, they were standard metric bolts. I just brought an old one and compared.

Would I be able to get them from Fastlane?
(Searched and couldn't find any listings for just bolts. Do I need to actually call and ask for them?) |

Ace hardware has a good selection of quality bolts in metric. Allen too.

I don't know if they carry standard type bolts (you can always call), but they may have some specialty bolts for the engine. Some are probably just dealer parts. Are you looking for something specific at the moment?

I've also noticed that it seems like a lot of them are zinc plated. How common is it to find aftermarket bolts like that? ....if Fastlane has the actual MBZ bolts and they don't demand a small sacrifice for them, I'd rather get the real thing.

In the delorean community.. we have a habbit of replacing every bolt we remove with something stainless.. unless the car is for concours judging.
But Ace has a great selection.. if you are lucky to have an ace with a big fastener section. |

Tacoma Screw.
There are some things they won't have - like door striker bolts - but for everything of the more-or-less ordinary variety, well, they do!
This is for folks along the I-5 corridor in OR, and WA. For everybody else, try the yellow pages under "fasteners" or something along those lines. When in doubt, Google! Jay.

Living in Tacoma, I can't say enough good about being able to walk into the Tacoma Screw store and say "I need one of these, but a little longer/shorter/different", and have them rummage around in the back for a few minutes and come out with whatever the fastener is that I was after.
I've found another local shop that's slightly smaller and does the same, but it's nice to have the big one there when you need it. As far as the zinc plating goes, you can get zinc galvanized bolts, but stainless isn't hard to get either, as TheDon mentioned, nor is it a bad idea to use anti-seize paste when needed, or thread sealer (not thread locker...) when near a coolant passage. I just replaced a water pump on my SEC, and had to replace a number of the bolts due to their having rusted in place and snapping two of the three on the side housing when trying to remove them. The replacement bolts were slimed with protective paste to keep that from being a problem the next time someone has to remove them. (Hopefully never, but...)

Yes, Our local ACE has a bunch of metric fasteners, but I did not want to wait until I had it apart, and then either they did not have my size, or the bolt broke or was stripped . . . mines a DD!
