Vibration: Yet Another Question

1985 300 TDT 312K
I have a vibration somewhere in my driveline. It is not the engine as that is smooth throughout the rpm range while in Park. I can feel this vibration in the chassis while increasing throttle e.g. Cruising at 40 mph and press on the throttle gently and the car will vibrate slightly until you back off slightly and let the car just cruise along. Anytime you give it throttle while cruising this occurs. It can be light throttle or heavy throttle. Back off and cruise and the vibration is gone. Speed doesnt matter....happens at 40 mph or 80 mph.
Work performed: New Motor mounts, engine shocks and bushing kits, valve adjustment, flex discs, center support/bearing/boot. Trans mount new 30,000 miles ago. All fluids and filters changed, new rear axles. All MB factory parts used.
When the driveshaft was off, we noticed that the universal joint had the "notch" on both axis that happens in the position where the universal usually runs{they dont move much under normal circumstances}.
The only things left I can think of are to have a new universal put on the driveshaft/balancing and/or new trans mount.
Any other thoughts or suggestions?? I think I've read 1,000 posts on driveline vibrations!
Thanks
John

Check if the wheels are not damaged. Properly balanced.

Why would wheels only vibrate while under increasing throttle? Either they are balanced or not....they would vibrate going along at 50mph and putting it in neutral as well as any other car moving scenario if they were damaged No??.
The vibration on my car happens only when giving throttle to the car? Does this make sense or am I missing something you are saying?

Doc,
I thought of this bushing as mine is original to the car. It would be the easiest place to start. What do you think of the "notchy" feel of the universal at its center point? Is this an issue?

Well, honestly, it is only rotating parts that vibrate. It could be completely possible the rims are bent or they're not. I've heard of rims doing vibrations at speeds such as yours. Dealer did two alignments and balances before they said the rims were bent.

A careful inspection of the flex disks might be in the cards. Torque and loading them might put the driveshaft a little off centre if they have deteriorated to any extent.

Doc Bert,
Are there centering bushings on both ends of the driveshaft? Are they pressed on or just slide into place? Any special tools or suggestions on ease of replacement?
Thanks
John

Just did the same work this weekend, same slight vibration! Sounds like a thrumming boat engine at speed (65ish). I carefully marked all the drive shaft parts with painted lines and lined them all back up. Only thing I can come up with is a "possible" faulty center bearing. The vibration is not extreme and actually very slight, but noticeable to me, not to anyone else in the car!

All discs and other rubber parts and bearing bracket were torqued to spec. ???

Only difference between us is that I was chasing a body/engine vibration and just added this one since the body/engine vibration is still there.

I can cruise along at any steady speed and not feel the vibration...it only occurs under increasing throttle. Step on the gas = vibration. Let off the gas and just cruise = no vibration. I can do 40 mph or 80 mph; no difference

Thanks, I figured the the universal might be the culprit. I'll probably remove it and send it to Atlanta driveline for a rebuild.

this is also the symptoms you would get if the ring and pinion are out of spec...

Seems to obvious but did you check your lug nuts?

(Don't ask why I ask)
