Needing a 307/2.8 swap for my newly acquired 84 300SD I had done the rounds of all the yards around my home finding nothing. Then out in the country at a little yard the owner said he was not too much into European stuff but there may be something way in the back, go gave a look. Well there sits a 85 300SD 185K km with a perfect but now rusted body. A smashed piston sticking out the side of the block. Everything up front is gone as well as the turbo. The trani is gone, the drive shaft with it. But there sits a 2.8 differential with the axles plus the dash to go with it. I also get the mono valve, The ACC unit, all the dash wood, door post trim, original exhaust system and 4 window brushes with chrome. $400can for the lot. Lucky or what!!!!
The diff swap took four hours total. Left the exhaust system in place and didn't touch the drive shaft. Dropped the subframe and pulled the old diff back away from the drive shaft. Only had to drop the right caliper. Easy swap with the axles installed. Don't even have to drain the oil. Always amazed how much better the trani shifts with the correct load. The diff is dead quite.
