Removing 5-spd manual out of 190E 2.3 16V difficulty?

Iam not having any difficulty yet.

I came across a 86 190E 2.3 16v with a manual 5 speed. I was thinking about removing it with shifter and shift rods.

I have pulled 240D transmissions at PNP w/o any problems.
I remove driveline, cross mount, and the trans and eng sag down and everything is reachable. then just lift trans down and out.

The 190 looks a little more cramped in the work space area. not much room at the back of the engine and firewall to get to the upper bolts.

Iam wondering if it is possible to remove this 5-spd the same way?

any one know how much more the 5 is than the 4-spd?
4-spd isn`t all that bad to manhandle w/o trans jack. just don`t want this thing to do me in. Iam not 20yrs old like I try to think I am.

Cant speak for the manual trans but removing the autotrans required three 12" extentions to reach the top two or three bolts on the bell housing. Suspect the manual is the similar.

I had two (2) twenty year old kids put mine back in--beer being cheaper than a transmission jack!

Not a lot heavier...maybe ten pounds or twenty. You know that tranny does not have an overdrive fifth gear. It is a close ratio five speed with a one to one fifth. Its a rugged little device though.

OH really? I thought they all were overdrive.

I saw this car at the PNP with 153000 miles on it. It`s about to see the end of it`s days there, so thought about pulling it.

This thing sure is cramped for work space, and I thought I would throw it out here for some feed back.

So tomarrow if I go, Iam coming home with it, or in frustration, it stays.

Also I don`t have anything to put it in, just can`t stand to see thing destroyed that are good.

They are fine trannies. be sure to get the shifter flywheel and complete clutch assembly as well.

The top bolts are best handled with multiple extensions, I like a big long handle 1/2" fine tooth ratchet because it’s hard to get much of a swing with the handle unless you’re far enough back so the ratchet head is below the tranny tunnel! Or you can try 5' of extensions!

I'm almost certain the bell housing bolts are 19 mm on these cars, a six point Craftsman swivel socket makes getting the tool on the bolt and keeping it on when you're pulling on it easier. A swivel that is tighter rather than looser makes it easier also because the top bolts are kind off recessed in between the reinforcing webs of the bell housing. I know on the auto tyrannies there is one bolt on the passenger side that has very little room around it to get a socket on, if you have a thin wall 19 mm bring it with you!

These manual trannies aren't as heavy as an auto tranny but they still weigh about 60 lbs so don't drop it on your head! When doing this at a bone yard in the past I've used an inflatable $1 beach ball inside an old sweat shirt, get everything unbolted and ready to pull, blow up the ball in the shirt under the tranny, and pull the tranny off the engine and roll it onto the ball. Either unplug the ball's air inlet for use again or just poke a hole in it and the tranny will nicely lower to the ground as the ball deflates. I started doing it this way after I broke one of the exhaust bracket mount rings off the bottom rear of a tranny, it just landed at enough of an angle at the rear and the ring popped right off like it was plastic! It was a pain because no one wanted to weld it back because they where worried about the heat with oil in the case and gaskets near it. I eventually fabricated a bracket that mounted to the bolts that hold the tranny case together to fix things.

Don't forget your 12 mm 12 point socket for the flywheel bolts!

inside please..

where are you located.. i want the interior to that car. i picked up a 190dt that im making perfect and i want either a sportline interior and/or one from one of the cossies.. let me know, i would take the wheels and many other parts off it as well.. like fenders and side skirts and bumpers etc.. what i really want to do is drop an 87td e6cyllinder engine into one of the cossies but i have not found one with a blown engine that still looks ok as of yet. perhaps soon.

Iam on the west coast, in california right next to Santa Cruz. the car is in San Jose, Ca. at the PNP on Commercial. the car is black, with black interior. as I remember. the interior is sort of beat up.

Billybob, thank you for the information. I have a good selection of tools that should GET ER DONE. Iam sure I have a 17 and a 19mm swivel socket, a good selection of extentions and a 1/2 in long ratchet. everytime I go to PNP, I add one more tool I didn`t have the last time. tool box must be up to 100#

maybe PNP will allow me to bring in a Rascal old people scooter to haul my tools .

Yeah! Then you can wire in an inverter to use power tools! I actually use a two wheeled folding cart like the civilized people use to drag their golf club bag behind them! On rainy days I even take an umbrella with me!
