What's the most difficult job you did...
I'm still a rookie learning from ya'll everyday - still looking into the engine bay of the two MBs I've got with some trepidation. Wondering what are some of the toughest jobs you all have to deal with working in these cars!?
For me (so far) it was the oil cooler lines combined with the engine mounts in my 300D - took a while for me, lots of cussing and contorting to get to the stuff I needed to get. Very satisfying afterwards... Curious about some of the others' adventures....

removing oil cooler lines off turbo engine. had to take out a bunch of crappe to get access to a few small bolts, especially the ones behind the IP, and also removing the oil filter housing was a major pain.

No question! Replacing shifter bushings on 300TD without the proper tool!!!
A close second was getting the metal lines threaded in the SLS valve.

Pulling the transmission on the 300SD so far. Too many bolts to every damn thing. Dropping the driveshaft was interesting, first one I've done since I moved and no longer have a compressor. Not much room to swing a ratchet there.
I'm going to do a timing chain and a bunch of other stuff, so I'm sure there will be something harder. |

Writing a check to have the engine replaced in the 300D.

guys, how much street cred can someone who doesn't lift a finger but to write checks to others who do all the wrenching really have on this site, post count notwithstanding?
i'm going to need to see pics of a guy drenched in oil to make up for this one--not pics of a dude skiing on a slope

My hardest is a tie in between replacing a water pump out on the street in front of my house since I live in a row home and trying to manually extract the ignition tumbler from the steering wheel... but I just got another SD that I'm going to be swapping my engine into, while doing a head gasket and timing chain job so this might get interesting.

Getting the bolt loose on the brace/bracket under the turbo on the 617.952.
240D, Mounting the Master Cylinder and adjusting the bushing on the rod. Bleeding the clutch R/R the peddle assembly from the auto to the assembly with the clutch peddle. along with that is the top left nut that holds the brake booster and the peddle assy together. removing the driveshaft from the differential when the rubber disc is rusted/stuck to it. removing & replacing the Valve cover on the 617. never fails, the gasket will fall off when replacing the cover. do a dry run w/o the gasket, and almost every time it will drop right on. replace gasket on cover, and it will hang up and be a fight getting it to drop on. The ones you're not sure you'll eventually get are always hard. Replacing a split radiator hose in a 79 SAAB 900 was like that. Had to sneak the new one under a manifold or something. Wasn't til I saw the sun setting, snow in the field and felt the engine getting cold that I had the desperation and extra 1/2" of finger needed to get it on the t'stat nipple.
