Rock redux, can I drive with these brackets off?
RE: my other thread about the rock my kid hit that hammered the AC brackets and the oil pan.
Phil just called with the bad news that my AC is aftermarket. The car was sold without AC originally. I don't know who put it on or who made the mounts. I want to take these hammered brackets off and get them straightened and the torn ear on one of them rewelded, but don't know if I can just take them off and still drive the car or if there's more to it than that. Not using the AC this time of year of course. Your thoughts?

You can probably get away with it hanging there if you remove the belt and if the upper bolt mount is solid and not flimsy.
If that rear bracket is not cracked, you can leave it in there for added security and just straighten it out later when you get the front bracket welded. .

If it were mine I would take that front adjusting bracket off. disconnect the clutch and drive it till you get it fixed. The AC is used in defrost with heat to dry the air going on the windshield (might not in aftermarket but don't take a chance). A good welder can fix it.
Good luck Robert |

That looks like a Sanden AC compressor set up like the one I removed from a Euro 300D. that is a better compressor than the GM R-4, or hocky puck.
Yeah just remove the belt, that will take the tention off it. there should be the large bolt on top that fits through the engine block that it sort of hangs on. looks like the rear bracket is also bent. sure took a hit. take the brackets to a welding/machine shop to get them straightened and the mounting hole welded up. Could you post a couple pictures from the top and rear to show how the mount is bolted to the engine? Charlie
