Yesterday, not today

That Global warming has not hit us yet! We were hoping for some and it seems we are being by passed again. Do you think algore could send us some? Well anyway, yesterday at 10 F it fired us very quickly. Today at exactly 0 degree F, nauda, nuts, nothin. Well, I have her plugged in now, hope she fires up this PM. Looks like it is time to keep that heater plugged in.

Same here in NC. Raleigh MIGHT get above freezing today. That Arctic air mass doesn't mess around. I did an internship with NASA in '97 and truth be known, we were looking at a ~6 to 7 year temperature range stabilization up until then. There is a long running, multi phase project called, "Mission to Planet Earth" that corroborated that with NOAA and other groups around the world. If that were not enough, from '99 to 2008 we have been in a progressive cooling trend. A similar change is happening on Mars. All the while solar output is very slightly decreasing (about 0.02% = 12 year low in brightness & 55 year low in radio output.) It runs in cycles, as it always has. They are NOT ready to call it another Maunder Minimum but they are calling it a "Deep Solar Minimum." And as with NASA, it's science 'We could be wrong, so stay tuned.'

Its due to the over 70 volcanoe eurutions in 2009.They never explained why so many, two they never counted on ash producing a little ice age.Last time volcanoe did that, there was snow in June in the U.S.

I feel like this is quickly turning into a thread that would best be put in "Open Discussion".

I started my car up last night with the wind chill bringing temps into 3* and 7* ranges! Two full glow cycles really does the trick almost every time.

I haven't been driving my 240D because of the alternator belt, but I started it the other night when it was around 10, just to see what would happen. It started up easy, one glow cycle, without much cranking ... a little stumbly idle but smoothed out. Not bad considering it wouldn't start at all in 50 degrees before I put the fast glow system in. My 300D has started in as low as -7 F, never used a block heater on either. Those temps are ambient ... keep in mind wind chill doesn't affect a car ... other than the fact that your frozen hands my not be able to turn the key ...

18F outside now, but it dropped to below 10F last night. I was just out in the garage, and it's 32F in there without a heater running. No other electrical appliances either, and it's detached so there's no heat from the house. That garage is well-insulated, but I have no idea how it's staying so warm in there.

Probably insulated enough that heat rising off the ground collects in there just enough to bring the temps up a little. Our garage is big and airy and has windows missing and the door always partially open (let cats in and out). It's cold as ^&%* in there, but still better than outside, even when there's no wind. That said, I've still been too much of a wimp to get out there and do the brakes on my 300D. I've been a little bluesy to begin with lately, and when I look outside and it's gray, frozen and trees are blowing across the yard, my motivation kinda flops. I feel as though a large, heated, well-lit garage or toy-barn would go a long way in improving my recent case of the blahs.

Here in N. Florida the low for the next few days is about 25 degrees. My 300D started up this moring no problems at all with one 40 second cylce of the glow plugs, i still have the old loop style plugs.

Also, solar heating. The roof and walls will collect a significant amount of energy, especially if the building is uninsulated.

Very cold indeed. I just changed my oil in my driveway, and it was...brisk...lying under the 300D. Thermometer reads 9 degrees right now. Brrrrr....

Maybe this comment should go in the thread "You know you're obsessed when..."

My answer would be "...when you can get under the car b/c there's 6 inches of ice in the way." I figured out a way to wriggle my arm in there though. :)

LOL. I did the belts on my 240D while lying in the snow. Admittedly, I eventually gave up and drove the Jeep when I lost the ability to move my fingers at all.

What oil is in the engine?

pawoSD 01-03-2010 09:19 PM

I washed the salt off my car when it was 9F yesterday morning......half the car ended up coated with ice, and I could not feel my hands. BUT, I did get the salt off! :D

X100. I'm tired of not being able to do things because it's cold outside. Winter wonderland foooey!

If I can't find this building I'm gonna move when I get the chance. I'm tired of no space and no heat.
