Found a way to get extended glow
I have been reading the posts on two to three glows before starting when cold. I hooked a light to the glow plugs to see when the relay kicks out. I noticed when I bumped the starter and the key stayed on the glow plugs stayed on also. The relay stays on extending the glow cycle and when your ready to start you turn the key off and back on engaging the starter. Starting right up.
My 240D has the updated pencil plug system with the new relay. I'm guessing this is the after glow feature. This extends the glow cycle without having to listen for the relay clicking and cycling the key.

Yea you have have the updated relay which keeps the glow plugs on 30 -45 seconds after ignition...
I installed the updated GP relay a while back, along with new GP's when the system failed. Really handy and have noticed a large reduction on cold start up due to the Gp's cycling longer.

My glow plugs stay on for 3 mins after bumping the starter wether the car is running or not. I'm guessing my purple wire is cut? If so does this have any Ill effects on anything. It sure gives you one good pre glow.

I have pencil plugs, does that automatically indicate an updated relay? Regarding the afterglow, if the relay has audibly clicked off, that means the plugs aren't going to glow again unless recycled, correct? I can hear the relay click off about 30-40 seconds after putting the key in glow position. I'm thinking I don't have afterglow. Confused....

I've been curious about afterglow, as in my application (OM617 swapped into a chevy pickup), my glow method is manually holding down a button for 10 seconds before I start.
I was wondering how long you can safely leave the glow plugs engaged after the engine starts running. It appears 2 to 3 minutes is fine? Which leads me to believe that the glow plugs are basically immune to the heat of a running engine? I'm assuming the glow plugs are on at 100% duty cycle (that is, they aren't pulsed in any manner once the engine starts?). This gives me ideas about making my own afterglow circuit which might follow an algorithm like this: if ( coolant_temp < warmed_up && rpm < 1000 ) glow |

That was hilarious! Doesn't a motor crank much faster when it has super low compression from driving it around like an *******!

That clears that up. I was thinking my starter had problems. Just a gas engine with a bad exhaust. It was still funny !!
