A happy diesel owner, again!

I put a deposit on a 1985 Astral Silver 300CD today to replace the 1985 Nautical Blue one that I stupidly sold 6 months ago.

It needs some work, and I think I'll be into this one for more than I was with the blue one, but what the heck.

If you saw my post about the trans not shifting, well, this is the car. Today it shifted beautifully, one of the nicest shifts I've seen.

First it needs about a gallon of Simple Green and elbow grease for the interior, then a detailed wash and wax. Finally, off to the salvage yard for a set of original rims. The current rims are black with break dust and the chrome plating has peeled off, I don't think they can be saved. Then off to the tire store for a new set of Michelins MXV4's.

One thing I noticed today that I didn't see before was the rear window is cloudy at the bottom. I think that happens when the glass is separating. Sounds like big $$. The coupes have those little wires used for the defroster. Almost killed the deal for me.

I missed that diesel smell.

Craig

Thanks Bill. Did you see the pictures of my other CD on my web site. I should have never sold it. I got it fixed up really nice.

A deal breaker, yes! I had visions of several hundred dollar bills in my head, 6 to be exact. And that was my gut reaction even though I don't know for sure.

I took some pics even though I'm not picking up the car until next week, but the car is WAY to dirty to post them. I'll do a before and after next week.

300 CD's do RULE!

Craig

Congrat's Craig

If you've ever had a CD, it's hard to imagine being without one. I'm on my second time around with the same one. Well now that I think about it, maybe it's the third time. (1). Bought it for my daughter, didn't get the oilfilter cap tight after an oil change and spun a bearing. (2) Rebuilt the engine, got rear-ended. (3) Bought it back and in the midst of getting it back up to snuff. I was an inch away from giving up on him and calling the "Hook". Even went as far as buying a 300SD to take his place....Just couldn't do it. So if anyone knows how tickled you are, it's me!

Wheels around here go for about twelve bucks apiece. Of course they will need plenty of work one way or another. I see where some of the guys have found a paint that is really close to a match. Do a search I'm sure you'll find the thread. I've had one set polished and am very satisfied with the results. They have been polished for several years and I haven't had any problems. Just keep them clean. There was a thread not too long ago about polished wheels, and they mentioned a problem with dog urine, my travels must keep mine "pee free". I have a second set being polished right now at different shop than I used the first time, the price is right ($40 a wheel) but they are having a hard time breaking through the paint and primer with the "Envronmentally Friendly" chemicals that they must now use. The two days that they quoted is now gone into the second week with no light at the end of the tunnel yet. They may wind up owning the wheels...we'll see.

Well....good luck, can't wait to see the pics, post them on this same thread so they will ring my bell and I'll be sure to see them. Thanks

Ernie

I found Honda silver from the early eighties looks real nice ,but it takes a lot of sanding to get nicks out and then they have to be primered...

Sun Valley Auto Dismantelers (all MB) has them for $35 each. I think I'll go that route. $12 each where you are, I gotta move!

Jeez, for that price I'll buy 2 sets and have one set polished. Hey Ernie, do you have pics of your polished rims? And what type of shop does this kind of work?

Craig,
I figured out what it took to get back into my server, so here's a close up of the polished wheel, please pardon the crunched quarter panel.

Those look great. What is the difference from chrome? I thought that they might look more like sterling silver, and they do.

Really different and unique.

Congrats Craig~
From one Astral Silver 300D to another.
I had my rims refinished at the cost of $100 each. Overall very satisfied with it, but what a pain keeping those rims clean. Im out there once a week cleaning em.
Dont know about your back window, rear glass is often tricky on those, so just have an expert do it, not someone learning on your car.
What color is your interior, blue? Happy TURBODIESELING~
