Slight IP problem.. self induced.

This is a thread that I have posted in the "parts" section. Maybe you can read it and tell me if this will work.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

WTB: om617 IP top plate
Let me explain...

I decided to try to remove the ALDA on my '85 300td and in the process RIPPED the plate on top of the IP that the ALDA is connected to. I need a new one. I am still driving it since it does not seem to leak fuel.. but I need a new one.

REPLY
I see that I was not very specific... story of my life.

All I need/want is the top plate that screws to the top of the IP. This plate is what the ALDA attaches to. I assume I can unscrew the four screws and pull the plate off, ALDA and all. But it does occur to me that the ALDA has to push/make contact with something in the IP.... so that plate may have a magic rod that is attached deep deep in the bowels of the IP.

I decieded to park the TD and got my dead grandmothers Cadillac out of storage... Good ole 5.7 V8 put the poor TD to shame . If I had the TD handy I would try to pull the plate off.

Anyway... hope this helps

Yes you can remove the plate, but...YOU MUST REMOVE THE ALDA BEFORE YOU CAN REMOVE THE PLATE.
That being said, there is an e-clip that holds a washer and spring for the rod that is actauted by the ALDA. You must remove the e-clip, washer and spring - then you can remove the plate. Be careful because the parts will go flying if you are not careful.

I found this out while disassembling an IP in the junk yard. I ended up breaking said rod as I was prying on the plate.

If you don't put the spring on after you have finished fixing the plate you will have NO power what so ever, ask me how I know.

I will say the TD's faster now. I guess the damage to the plate allows the ALDA to sit higher thus having a similar effect to removing it.

The problem is I can;t get the ALDA off. Is the "nut" on top of the plate affixed to the plate? Does the ALDA "spin" off and the nut?? I don't even know. All I know is the ALDA would not move and I decided to "try" harder

The ALDA has a stationary male thread. The plate has a rotating female nut that remains on the plate. You can use a 1-1/16" wrench for the plate nut and I think its a 24mm for the ALDA. Sometimes it can be a bugger to get off the first time.

That's exactly what I needed to know thanks. I will work on it today after a make some sort of maintenance tent that I can point my torpedo heater into. I doubt it will get over 20°today.
