So what is wrong with it?
Looks like an awesome car. I'd love to have that exact one....black on black....602 turbo.....W124....that'd be a sweet High MPG commuter....I consider my 300SD a bit thirsty, it only averages about 25-27mpg usually...though I do have soft snow tires on it right now. |

Yeah, I'd say you got a good deal; $700 car with an interior like that is fantastic. Congrats.

pretty good deal
Now detail it so the black paint is like a mirror |

That's easily a $701.00 dollar car.

Who will be the first to offer to save you from your bad deal, ...

This is superdeal but You already have half dozen other cars. Are You going to keep it or fix & sell? |
NICE find,i found an 87 201 turbo for 800 in the summer of 08.The paint wasnt anywhere near what that 124 looked like but it only had 133k on the odometer.I would sell it and put it towards the w123 turbo coupe I have always wanted .......
|
Just an amazing deal!!!! Nice.......
|
How in the heck did I miss that one?
|
Front brakes need work? Holy moly. Yeah, a screaming deal.
|
Did 90's have leather wrapped steering wheels and wood trim on the doors? {I guess it would appear so, but for some reason I thought that came later}
How is the rust situation? Working AC? Any thoughts about wagons lately? :wink3: |
All day!
On my '99 E300TD. |
Dash and interior look really nice. How does it run?
|
Nice. Reminds me of my deal on my 85 300D. Paid 250.00 for it. It had a stuck caliper and the tranny leaked . The person selling said it "Needed a seal" but turned out it was only the metal tranny cooler line clamped to the oil pan had a whole rubbed in it from the clamp . a couple inches of rubber hose, tube cutter, and a couple hose clamps fixed er up.
I'll trade you. |
Just the brakes? wow. I need to find a deal like that!
|
I am impressed. Around here (in Omaha), any diesel Mercedes seem to be rare.
Two weeks ago I saw a post on CL for a 1983 300D in Kansas City. Now, that's 3.5 hrs driving from me but I was willing to do it... A couple hours later it was gone... |

The engine runs real smooth. The transmission shifts hard, but that could be a vacuum leak. It's consistent with the engine running after turning off the key and needing to use the stop switch. I already noticed one vacuum hose disconnected and I put that back in. There are probably more like it. I've got a 602/603 service manual I can finally put to good use. The transmission shifter indicator light strip on the console is loose. The blower fan in not running, but that could be as simple as a fuse. Driver's arm rest is loose. Left rear side marker light bulb is out. Washer fluid is not spraying, but it is only 25 degrees so it could be frozen. Rear head rests don't retract on their own via the console switch. The air sampler hose fan is making racket under the glove box. The brakes barely work, and probably need a good flushing. It only came with the valet key so I don't have a clue how many bodies are in the trunk. This is going to be an easy fix up project with my boys. I want them to learn to drive in a safe car, but first they will have to work with me to fix it up. Crazy Ray's here I come! |

Fantastic Deal! If only I could find one like that.
Gee, honey, It followed me home... |
Awesome find! Congratulations!

That is the car and the deal I am looking for. Great find.

The WVO thing is bad, I've seen many cars "for sale" that "used to be run" on WVO....sigh. They are pretty much a guaranteed project. I'd only buy one if I got it cheap enough to make an engine swap worth it.

I still believe that the WVO thing can be (and occasionally is) done right. Just not worth the effort and investment to me. Kind of like deer hunting, ... you have to like the hunt because it really isn't about the meat. |
Nice Paul. So, now it's the Cheap 124 Club?

Airbag retrofit thread. |
The "124 Mercedes Bible" is in my opinion, full of errors.
However, it was optional in the 124 in 1991, I know this because I had one ordered in my '91 T124. |

Well, so far my diagnosis has been pretty much on the money. I pulled the vacuum pump today and sure enough the roller bearings failed. Fortunately the injector pump pulley looks okay as the outer bearing race retainer took the brunt of the abuse. Unfortunately, however, there are now 12 ball bearings and one of the two inner races somewhere on the bottom of the oil pan. At least they are magnetic and I should be able to recover them either through the oil drain plug hole with a magnet stick (best case) or through removing the side extension on the oil pan. Worst case is having to drop the entire oil pan itself. Let's hope I don't have to go there.
Here is the damage (note, I removed the two springs, axle, roller, and the other bearing inner race, so those are not a problem floating around the oil pan). Too bad there is not a repair/update kit for these; it seems a shame to trash an otherwise good pump housing. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1182.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1175.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1178.jpg |

I changed out the vacuum pump today, obtained from a pick & pull yard 1987 300SDL donor. I put on a new accessory belt as long as I was in there. The car actually stops when I push the brakes and the engine cuts off on its own when I turn off the key. :D
There are still 12 ball bearings and an inner bearing race on the bottom of the oil pan I need to get out. I bought a oil pan side extension gasket. When the weather is better I'll climb under there and fish the extra bits out through the opening. The transmission is still shifting hard. The blower motor is not working and I suspect the regulator is out. The wiper washer fluid pumps are also not functioning. Hopefully the fluid tank is just clogged. In the mean time, here are some pictures of the vacuum pump change. http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1221.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1222.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1224.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1225.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1227.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1231.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1233.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1234.jpg http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...o/100_1236.jpg |
Cool. So, you put on another old style pump? I thought these pumps could destroy your engine when they failed? Obviously yours did not. That is awesome.
I had been scared into spending 300.00 on a new vac pump before mine even fails. Is that not necessary in your opinion? |
