I think I just got a pretty good deal.

Just picked up a 1990 300D 2.5 Turbo for a whopping $700.00. 200K on the clock.

So what is wrong with it?

Looks like an awesome car. I'd love to have that exact one....black on black....602 turbo.....W124....that'd be a sweet High MPG commuter....I consider my 300SD a bit thirsty, it only averages about 25-27mpg usually...though I do have soft snow tires on it right now.

Yeah, I'd say you got a good deal; $700 car with an interior like that is fantastic. Congrats.

TheDon 02-01-2010 08:37 PM

Now detail it so the black paint is like a mirror

seanarcher 02-01-2010 10:05 PM

NICE find,i found an 87 201 turbo for 800 in the summer of 08.The paint wasnt anywhere near what that 124 looked like but it only had 133k on the odometer.I would sell it and put it towards the w123 turbo coupe I have always wanted .......

JimmyL 02-01-2010 10:10 PM

Just an amazing deal!!!! Nice.......

powerpig 02-01-2010 10:26 PM

How in the heck did I miss that one?

gerkebi 02-01-2010 10:44 PM

Front brakes need work? Holy moly. Yeah, a screaming deal.

JimmyL 02-01-2010 11:08 PM

Did 90's have leather wrapped steering wheels and wood trim on the doors? {I guess it would appear so, but for some reason I thought that came later}
How is the rust situation? Working AC?
Any thoughts about wagons lately? :wink3:

Skid Row Joe 02-01-2010 11:24 PM

All day!

On my '99 E300TD.

RML 02-01-2010 11:30 PM

Dash and interior look really nice. How does it run?

biopete 02-01-2010 11:42 PM

Nice. Reminds me of my deal on my 85 300D. Paid 250.00 for it. It had a stuck caliper and the tranny leaked . The person selling said it "Needed a seal" but turned out it was only the metal tranny cooler line clamped to the oil pan had a whole rubbed in it from the clamp . a couple inches of rubber hose, tube cutter, and a couple hose clamps fixed er up.

I'll trade you.

pawoSD 02-02-2010 12:02 AM

Just the brakes? wow. I need to find a deal like that!

konstan 02-02-2010 12:13 AM

I am impressed. Around here (in Omaha), any diesel Mercedes seem to be rare.

Two weeks ago I saw a post on CL for a 1983 300D in Kansas City. Now, that's 3.5 hrs driving from me but I was willing to do it... A couple hours later it was gone...

The inside is really nice. Still, I have not yet seen the car in daylight yet. I bought it with a credit card based on the Craigslist pictures. The guy was swamped with calls just after I paid him. Several people said they were on their way, but showed up to a sold car. I guess you snooze you loose.

The engine runs real smooth.

The transmission shifts hard, but that could be a vacuum leak. It's consistent with the engine running after turning off the key and needing to use the stop switch. I already noticed one vacuum hose disconnected and I put that back in. There are probably more like it. I've got a 602/603 service manual I can finally put to good use.

The transmission shifter indicator light strip on the console is loose.

The blower fan in not running, but that could be as simple as a fuse.

Driver's arm rest is loose.

Left rear side marker light bulb is out.

Washer fluid is not spraying, but it is only 25 degrees so it could be frozen.

Rear head rests don't retract on their own via the console switch.

The air sampler hose fan is making racket under the glove box.

The brakes barely work, and probably need a good flushing.

It only came with the valet key so I don't have a clue how many bodies are in the trunk.

This is going to be an easy fix up project with my boys. I want them to learn to drive in a safe car, but first they will have to work with me to fix it up. Crazy Ray's here I come!

Son true! Wow, you have found the car that I have been longing for. There are never any nice w124 300D with the 602 in the PNW, and if there are, the sellers generally want a human leg for them.

pawoSD 02-03-2010 07:15 AM

The WVO thing is bad, I've seen many cars "for sale" that "used to be run" on WVO....sigh. They are pretty much a guaranteed project. I'd only buy one if I got it cheap enough to make an engine swap worth it.

Cheap enough, or if it was owned/converted buy a Chemical Engineer who really knew what he was doing.

I still believe that the WVO thing can be (and occasionally is) done right. Just not worth the effort and investment to me. Kind of like deer hunting, ... you have to like the hunt because it really isn't about the meat.

When did the W124 get a passenger airbag?

Seems like I've seen a '93 with an airbag, but by no means take that as gospel.....

According the 124 Mercedes Bible, they were an option starting in 1990.

Passenger air bags came standard in 1993. I've never seen a 1992 or earlier W124 with a passenger air bag. If the 124 Mercedes Bible says they were an option, I'll take their word for it.

The "124 Mercedes Bible" is in my opinion, full of errors.

However, it was optional in the 124 in 1991, I know this because I had one ordered in my '91 T124.

That's pretty cool. I wonder how many people ordered them in '91 or '92. I bet it's a small percentage, probably less that 10%.

It was actually a dealer install option. That's what sold me on the idea of doing it myself. A list of the parts required to make the change is available at this link.

pwogaman 03-07-2010 10:54 PM

Well, so far my diagnosis has been pretty much on the money. I pulled the vacuum pump today and sure enough the roller bearings failed. Fortunately the injector pump pulley looks okay as the outer bearing race retainer took the brunt of the abuse. Unfortunately, however, there are now 12 ball bearings and one of the two inner races somewhere on the bottom of the oil pan. At least they are magnetic and I should be able to recover them either through the oil drain plug hole with a magnet stick (best case) or through removing the side extension on the oil pan. Worst case is having to drop the entire oil pan itself. Let's hope I don't have to go there.

Here is the damage (note, I removed the two springs, axle, roller, and the other bearing inner race, so those are not a problem floating around the oil pan). Too bad there is not a repair/update kit for these; it seems a shame to trash an otherwise good pump housing.

Wow. That was a lot of work. I was thinking i would swap out my airbag on my 93 for a glove box :) At least temporarily since my children are small. Thanks for showing me it can be done.

pwogaman 03-14-2010 07:56 PM

I changed out the vacuum pump today, obtained from a pick & pull yard 1987 300SDL donor. I put on a new accessory belt as long as I was in there. The car actually stops when I push the brakes and the engine cuts off on its own when I turn off the key. :D

There are still 12 ball bearings and an inner bearing race on the bottom of the oil pan I need to get out. I bought a oil pan side extension gasket. When the weather is better I'll climb under there and fish the extra bits out through the opening.

The transmission is still shifting hard. The blower motor is not working and I suspect the regulator is out. The wiper washer fluid pumps are also not functioning. Hopefully the fluid tank is just clogged.

In the mean time, here are some pictures of the vacuum pump change.

Cool. So, you put on another old style pump? I thought these pumps could destroy your engine when they failed? Obviously yours did not. That is awesome.

I had been scared into spending 300.00 on a new vac pump before mine even fails. Is that not necessary in your opinion?
